Definition : Digital Literacy (DL)
• DL - is the ability of the community to use ICT to find,
evaluate, create, and communicate information.
• This requires the community to have both cognitive and
technical skills.
• DL - is important because we live in a tech-dependent
world.
• The internet, search engines, email programs, blogs, and
online videos have all contributed to our expanding
knowledge and capabilities.
• DL - is thinking of literacy in terms of ICT.
Cont…
• DL - will help in bridging the digital divide within the
community.
• Creating better national connectivity through various
government development initiatives
• Empowering in basic computer skills and high-level
cognitive skills for finding, evaluating, ethically using,
creating, and sharing information are required for digitally
inclusive communities.
• As shown below, digital literacy has many dimensions that
could be achieved in the long run which need long term
planning and continuous development;

media tools used by young
people to engage with their
community
Some more ideas on this…
• Various definitions of digital literacy exist: ‘digital literacy
defines those capabilities which fit an individual for living,
learning and working in a digital society’ (Beetham, 2010).
• A shift in focus through widespread use of Web 2.0
technologies means that any current definition should now
include participation in social networks as a pivotal part of
knowledge acquisition and transfer.
Cont…
• Eisenberg (2008, 39) defines information literacy as ‘a set
of skills and knowledge that allows us to find, evaluate,
and use the information we need, as well as to filter out
