How do trampolines work?

• As you land on a trampoline the
springs stretch.
• The stretching force in the
springs, called the tension,
increases.
• This extra tension means there is
an unbalanced force on you which
pushes you up in the air again.

More weight
• When a heavier person
bounces on the
trampoline, the springs
stretch more.
• There is more tension in
the springs.

Variables
Aim: To investigate how the length of a spring is affected by the number of weights added

We now need to identify our variables

Independent (change) variable = ……………
Dependent (measure) variable = ……………..
Control (keep same) variable = …………………
Ext: Write a risk assessment table. Include 2x hazards, 2x risks and 2x control
measures
e.g. Hazard = Bunsen burner flame, risk = burning yourself, control measure = tie back long
hair, use safety flame when not using Bunsen

1. Set up your clamp stand and spring safely. Safety:

Take care removing
2. Measure the length of your spring with no weight.
weights – springs jump
• Record in the first box of the middle column.
Don’t drop weights or
3. Add the first 1N to your spring and measure. place near edge of bench
• Record in the second box of the middle column. Wear goggles at all times
• The second box of the final column can now be calculated. Remain at station
4. Remove the weight, add another 1N then repeat.
5. Continue until all 10N has been added and
measured.

So what is Hooke’s Law?

This theory of elasticity states that the extension of a spring

is proportional to the load applied to it.

What is an elastic limit?

“An elastic limit is the point where the graph…”
After this point the spring will be…and will not go back to…
Does your graph show the elastic limit? How big is it?
Why do you think trampolines have a weight limit?
“I think that trampolines have a weight limit because…”

The weight limits for a trampoline are based

on the load capacity rating of the springs or the support
rods that are used in the product's design. Exceeding
those weight limits makes it possible for the
trampoline to break. Most outdoor trampolines for kids
are designed to hold 200 pounds or less.

Weight limits are set so that the unit can operate

smoothly. The materials that are used for making
a trampoline should be capable of returning the force
that is exerted downwards by an individual with the similar
upward force. This is why the trampolines have springs.
