This is the skeleton.

The skeleton is made from bone.

There are 206 bones in the

human body.

Bones are made out of calcium

and other minerals

Do you think bone tissue is

alive?
🡪 Bone tissue is actually alive- it
has a blood supply to provide it
with nutrients and oxygen

The Skeletal System has three main functions:

PROTECTION The skeleton protects VITAL ORGANS. E.g. the skull protects
the brain, the ribcage protects the lungs and the pelvis
protects the reproductive organs.

SUPPORT This is the main function of the skeleton - to

SUPPORT OUR BODIES. The skeleton keeps the
body upright and the backbone supports the
upper body. Without a skeleton, what do you
think we would look like?

MOVEMENT The skeleton helps our bodies to move as there

are FLEXIBLE JOINTS between the bones that
MUSCLES are attached to.

Developing:

1. What properties do bones have that make

them suitable for supporting and
protecting the body?

Secure:

2. What happens if a bone is broken?

Extending: Challenge
yourself!
3. Do all bones of the skeleton help us move?

Developing:

Bones are hard and strong, making them

really good at protecting and supporting the
body

Secure:

If a bone is broken it can self repair the

damage- bones are smart!
Extending:

Not all bones are for movement, some are fixed

rigidly and cannot move e.g. bones of the skull
