Types of management theories

• Scientific management theory.

• Principles of administrative management
theory.
• Bureaucratic management theory.
• Human relations theory.
• Systems management theory.
1. Scientific management theory is a
method of improving efficiency in the
workforce.
This management theory uses scientific
methods to assess work processes. The
scientific method consists of three steps:
observation, experimentation, and analysis
2. Administrative management theory is to
find a rational way to design an organization
as a whole.
The theory generally calls for a formalized
administrative structure, a clear division of
labor, and delegation of power and authority
to administrators relevant to their areas of
responsibilities
3. Bureaucratic management theory is a way
of understanding organizations as systems that
are primarily characterized by hierarchical
chains of command and control.
The principle of hierarchy & discipline, which
requires that everyone follow orders from their
superiors without question.
e.g. Military
4. Human Relations management theory is
a premise of organizational psychology from
the early twentieth century, which suggests
that employee productivity and motivation can
be increased through positive social bonds in
the workplace and acknowledgement of the
worker as a unique individual.
e.g Team building or sportsfest
5. Systems theory of management
asserts that any organization is a
single, unified system of interrelated
parts or subsystems. Each part of the
overall system is dependent on the
others and cannot function optimally
without them.
The basic idea behind Systems Theory
is, “The whole is greater than the sum
of its parts.” An easy example of this
is baking a cake. If you were to lay out
all of the ingredients of a cake, you
would not have a cake. Instead, you
would have the ingredients of cake.

manager. Some people interchange the concepts of efficiency

differences of the following phrases?

speed in efficiency since it requires things to be done quickly to
avoid wasting time and effort.

Effectiveness - is the capacity to attain an intended objective or

result. It is often called “doing the right thing.” The intention is to
meet the desired goal regardless of the amount of input required.
