Introduction

Plant Layout: The arrangements of physical facilities

such as machinery , equipments within the factory
building in such a manner so as to have the quickest
flow of material at lowest cost & within the least
amount of handling in processing the product from the
receipt of material to the shipment of product.

Pilot Plant: It is the part of pharmaceutical industry

where a lab scale formula is transformed into a viable
product by development of practical procedure of
manufacture.
Objectives
● To increase the sale and decrease the
selling expenses
● Utilisation of labour efficiently
● Volume and product flexibility
● Ease of supervision and control
● Ease of maintenance
● Reduces hazards for personnel
● High machine or equipment utilization
● Improving productivity
Factors Influencing Layout

● Building
● Men
● Machinery
● Materials
● Movement
● Waiting Time
● Services & Changes
Factors To Be Considered In Plant Layout

1.Building and Structure : Based on the type of

production system

● Intermittent
● Continuous

2.Men:

● Number of People
● Unskilled and Skilled
● Physic of Worker
3.Machinery:

General Purpose Machine :Compact in

Size and Less Space
Special Purpose Machine :Large in size ,
complicated,high level automation

Number of Machines

Level of Automation (Semi or Fully):

High Complexity Wider Space
Material :

Flammable , Inflammable,Hazardous,and Non

Hazardous, Corrosive,Mercury,Oils , Fuels

Form of Material: Solid , Liquid ,Powder

Quality of material to be handled
Cycle Time :Consumption of Material
5.Movement :
Movement of Machine , Crane and People
Purpose of Movement (With Load/Without Load/
Quantity of Load )

6.Waiting Time:

Cycle time for completing each activity

Intermittent:
Uncertain and High
More storage places between machine and facilities

Continuous:
Defined & Low
Changes:

Production Volume
Product Type and Design
Process Type
Varieties
Frequency of Change

Services:

Electrical Supply
Pneumatic Supply
Water Supply
Chilling Process-Cooling Tower
Air Ventilation-Ducting
Fire Extinguisher-Water Sprinkler
Types of Layout
•Manufacturing units
•Traders
•Services Centers and Establishment

Manufacturing units
•Product or line layout
•Process or functional layout
•Fixed position or location layout
•Combined or group layout
Process Layout

Product Layout

Combination Layout
Fixed Position Layout
Storage space requirements

● Storage location
● Stores adjacent to manufacturing area
● General storage space requirements
● Adequate storage facilities
● Adequate space facilities
● Special storage space facilities
● For low temperature storage as cool place
freezer etc
● Highly toxic and explosive substances
● Containers for storage materials
● Liquid material stored in cans barrels
bottles
● Solid raw material in box, containers
● Gas are kept in cylinders
cGMP
CGMP refers to the Current Good
Manufacturing Practice regulations
enforced by the FDA.
● Personnel
● Premises and Industrial Layout
● Sanitation and Hygiene
● Water Treatment System
Basic Requirements ● Validation and Qualification
● Equipments Materials
of cGMP ● Documentation
● Self Inspection
● HVAC System ISO 9001:2008
● ISO 142001:2004,9000 series
Location and Layout of Hospital Pharmacy

Location and Layout of Community Pharmacy

The major factors responsible for Location Analysis :
• Transport facility for raw materials
• Larger labour supply.
• Electricity and safe drinking water facility
• Banking and Financial institution
• Availability of sources of raw materials
• Larger market
• Recreation facility
• University , Colleges , School , Hospital & Research centres
• Co-operative & helpful community
• Good industrial Laboratories .
Hospital Pharmacy

The department of the hospital

which deals with procurement ,
storage , compounding ,
dispensing , manufacturing ,
testing , packaging and
distribution of drugs.
Location of Hospital Pharmacy :

It should be laid in such a way that

there is a
Continuous flow of men and materials .

Facilities required in Hospital

Pharmacy
• 250 sq feet is the minimum
required area for any sized
hospital
• 10 square feet required for per bed
in 100 beded hospital
• 6 square feet required for per bed in
100 beded hospital
Design Layout :
Community Pharmacy

A community pharmacy is a pharmacy that deals

directly with people in the local area.
It has responsibilities including
compounding ,counseling , checking and
dispensing of prescription drugs to the paitents
with care ,accuracy and legality.
Analysis Location of Community Pharmacy :

▪ Population of the community

▪ Income distribution among the population
▪ Type of pharmacy
▪ Competition
▪ Flow of traffic

Location can be classified

Geographical Location
- urban area
- rural area
Design Layout :
Importance of pharmaceutical plant layout

Improves productivity : it refers to an effective control of

conversion process of inputs into outputs.
Improve our ability to meet customers needs : It helps us to
provide service to our target customers better than our
competitors. Long term survival of company depends upon
meeting customers need.
High goodwill : plant layout plays a key role in building the
brand name or reputation of the company.
Advantages:

The seven advantages of good plant layout :

1.To the Worker
2. In Labour Cost
3. In Other Manufacturing Costs
4. In the Manufacturing Cycle
5. In Production Control
6. In Supervision
7. In Capital Investment.
Conclusion :

● Pharmaceutical industry is regulated by GMPs.

● GMPs must be followed to maintain consistency.
● GMPs ensure that the drug products are safe, pure and
effective.
● GMP is a set of principle which followed by
manufacturers for therapeutic goods, helps to ensure
that the products manufactured will have required
Quality.
