Properties of Sound

BY: REYNALD F. VILLANUEVA

Recall:
How is the sound produced?

- Sound is produced when something

vibrates.
How is the sound transmitted?

- Sound waves are transmitted by a

vibrating molecule from one molecule
to another.
What are the factors that affect the speed of sound?
- The speed of the sound depends on the density and the
elasticity of the medium through which it travels. In
general, sound travels faster in liquids than in gases and
quicker in solids than in liquids. The greater the elasticity
and the lower the density, the faster sound travels in a
medium.

Complete the missing letters in a given word. Each
word has hints given to it.

S_ _ N_
(Created by vibrating object)
- Sound
P_ _CH
(The quality of a sound governed by
the rate of vibrations producing it; the
degree of highness or lowness of a
tone)
- Pitch
L _ _dn___
(The human perception of sound
intensity. It is frequently measured in
dB which is a scale based on the
human threshold of hearing)
- Loudness
Q __li__

(It is perceived as the quality of

different sounds)
- Quality
_ a_

(Responsible for hearing sounds

and for balance in the human
body)
- Ear
Objectives
recognize changes in pitch and loudness of sound;
discuss how pitch, loudness, and quality of sound
vary from one source to another;
 illustrate how organisms produce, transmit, and
receive sound;
Instructions:
Choose the leader per group.
Write all the findings and the answer in the provided
manila paper.
Those who not participate in group activity will be the
one to present their group work outputs.
You have 15 mins to finish your group activity.
Group 1 will report about the Pitch. You can search in your
book on page 333 about:
• definition of pitch.
• relation of the pitch and frequency.
• discuss how a certain animals hear things that humans
cannot.
• what are infrasonic waves and its frequency?
• give an example of infrasonic sources.
Group 2 will discuss the doppler effect. You can search
it in your book on page 335 about:

• what is the definition of doppler effect?

• how does it work?
• give an example of doppler effect that you experience
in your daily lives.
Group 3 will discuss the echolocation. You can find it in your
book on page 336. You need to discuss the ff:

• definition of echolocation.
• discuss how the echolocation works.
• give an example of organisms that use echolocation and
how they use echolocation to survive in their daily lives.
Group 4 will discuss the loudness. You can search it in your book
on page 337. You need to discuss the ff:

• definition of intensity.
• relationship of loudness and intensity.
• what unit are being use to measure the loudness of the sound?
• why the loudness of sound depends on the distance of the listener
from the source, and give a example scenario of it that you
experience in your daily life.
Group 5 will discuss the Quality. You can find in your
book on page 338. You should discuss the ff:
• what is Sound quality?
• what are fundamental tones and overtones?
• why the blending of the sound of different frequencies
gives the sound its quality?
• what is resonance?
