Animals’ sound

Procedure:
1. You will imitate the sound of the following animals: snake, bird, cow and lion.
2. Answer the following questions: (Read the details about characteristics of sounds
on the info card given to your group.)
3. Describe the sound of snake. Is it soft or loud? What characteristics of sound
was presented by the snake?
4. How will you describe the sound of the cow? Does it have low or high pitch?
What characteristics of sound does the cow presented?
5. What is the characteristic of a lion’s roar in terms of amplitude? Is it high or low?
Describe the sound of the dog as to its loudness.
6. In terms of frequency, how can you describe the sound of the bird? Does it have
high or low pitch sound?
7. What are the different characteristics of sound?

Group 2 ACTIVITY SHEET

INFO CARD

The sound that we hear around us is the type of energy made by the vibration that travels
through the air or any other medium and can be heard when it reaches a person’s ear.  So,
basically sound helps us to communicate with the other person. For example, we can hear
the musical instruments like tabla, flute, a guitar due to vibration. The characteristics of
sound are as follows:

Pitch:

The way our brain interprets the frequency of a sound is called its pitch. The faster a
body vibrates, the greater is the frequency of sound it generates. The greater the
frequency of a sound, the greater is its pitch. Thus, the faster the body vibrates, the
greater the pitch of the sound it generates.

Loudness

The loudness is a sensation of how strong a sound wave is at a place. It is always a relative
term and is a dimensionless quantity. The loudness depends on the amplitude of the
vibration. It will be louder when the amplitude is high. Suppose when we pluck a string of
the sitar it starts vibrating with low amplitude and if we apply more energy by plucking more
strongly, the string will vibrate with the greater amplitude and produce a loud sound. As the
amplitude of vibration increases, sound also increases.

Quality or Timbre:
The quality or timbre of a sound is a characteristic of sound which is used to distinguish
a sound from another which have the same pitch and loudness. Timbre is a quality of
musical tone to distinguish between two sounds when they are of the same frequency.
Every sound we hear depends on its source. Sound timbre is known as the
characteristic waveform of sound that depends on the material from which it produces.
In physics, the sound characterises as pitch, frequency, loudness, and timbre. Timbre is
one of the properties of a sound wave that distinguishes the characteristics of a note.
