Ready to Launch!

This self-learning package will introduce you to the concept of classifying objects and
events based on the observable properties of matter. This will enable you to demonstrate the
skill of classifying objects and events based on observable characteristics which will help you
meet the basic human needs and improve living standards.
Physical properties describe a substance. What words would you use to describe a
table? a chair? the sandwich you ate for snacks? You would probably say something about the
shape, color, and size of each item. Next, you might consider whether it is hard or soft,
smooth, or rough to the touch. Normally, when describing an object, you identify the charac-
teristics of the object that you can observe without changing the identity of the object.
The characteristics of a substance that can be observed without changing the identity
of the substance are called physical properties. In science, observation can include measur-
ing and handling a substance. All of your senses can be used to detect physical properties.
Color, shape, size, texture, volume, and mass are a few of the physical properties you proba-
bly have encountered.
This self-learning package will help you enumerate the different observable properties/

Scientists investigate, describe, and try to understand the things around us. For exam-
ple, if scientists are studying a rock, they might start by describing the rock’s size, shape, and
color. They would also try to find out how hard the rock is and whether it is rough or
smooth and shiny or dull. All these words describing what the rock is like being called the
“properties” or “characteristics” of the rock. To further illustrate this concept, show a shell,
leaf, or pine cone and ask students to describe something special that they notice about the
object.
Objects can also be sorted by size, according to whether they are small, medium, or
large. Explain that size is another property of an object. The objects can also be sorted by
shape, according to whether they are a square, triangle, or circle.

Abstraction and Generalization
Now that you have learned about inferencing, this is now the time for you to solidify your
understanding and skill of the topic through the ideas stated below.

· The process of sorting involves grouping objects or events according to their similarities
whereas the process of classifying involves grouping objects or events into pre-determined

groups.

· Objects can also be sorted by size, according to whether they are small, medium, or large.
· Objects have other properties in addition to their size, shape, and color. Objects may be

other properties.
