A Detailed lesson Plan in Science

Grade 7

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to;

a.) identify the components of solution;

b.) differentiate unsaturated, saturated and supersaturated solution; and

c.) solve the problem about percentage composition of a solution.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Solutions

Materials: Powerpoint presentation, chalk/marker, Projector

Reference: Science Learner’s Module

Values Integration: Cooperation and Collaboration

III. Procedure

A. Daily Routine
Teacher’s Activty Student’s Activity
a) Greeting
“Good Afternoon class” “Good Afternoon ma’am”

b) Prayers
“Let us all stand for a prayer” (Students will stand)

In the name of the father……..

c) Classroom Management
(Students picking up the trash)
“Before you take your seats, kindly pick up the
pieces of paper under your chair

“Thank you ma’am”

“You may take your seats”
B. Motivation
“Before we proceed to our discussion, let’s have a
simple experiment”

Materials:
2 Cups, Water, salt and sugar

Instructions:
1. Add the salt in a cup of water and stir until it
dissolves
2. Do the same procedures to sugar

“What did you observe or what happened to the “it dissolved

salt after adding it in a cup of water?

“Very Good”

“How about sugar, what did you observe? “it dissolved also ma’am”

“That’s right”

“Now based on our experiment what do you think

our topic today? Any idea what our experiment is
about?”
C. Presentation
“So our topic today is all about Solutions and at
the end of the lesson I am expecting that you will
be able to identify the components of solution,
describe the differences of unsaturated, saturated
and supersaturated solution and solve the problem
about percentage composition of a solution
“Our experiment a while ago is about solution.
Solution = Solute + solvent

Solution is a homogenous mixture consisting of a

solute and a solvent
Solvent is a substance that dissolves another in
order to make a solution
Solute is a substance dissolved in a solution
“In our experiment the water in the cup is the
solvent which are called aqueous solutions.
Sugar and salt is the solute”

Kinds of Solution
Kinds Solute Solvent Example
Gas Gas Gas Air
liquid Gas Liquid Soda
liquid Liquid Liquid Rubbing
alcohol
Solid Liquid Salt solution.
Sugar solution
Solid Solid Solid Silver in gold
Gas Solid marshmallows

Concentration refers to the relative amount of

solute dissolved in a solvent.

Types of Solution
1. Unsaturated Solution – a solution that contains
less solute than the maximum amount the solvent
can dissolve at a given temperature
2. Saturated Solution – a solution that contains
maximum amount of solute dissolved by a given
amount of solvent

3. Supersaturated Solution – a solution that

contains more solute than the maximum amount
the solvent can dissolve at a given temperature

Percentage Composition
Another way to express the concentration of a
solution is to report its percent by mass, percent
by volume, or percent by mass/volume

This can be expressed in equation form as:

% by mass = (mass solute/mass solution) x 100
= (mass solute/ mass solute + mass solvent) x 100

% by volume = (volume solute/volume solution)

x 100
= (volume solute/volume solute
+ volume solvent) x 100

% by mass/volume = (mass solute/volume

solution) x 100
Sample Problems
1. What is the percent by mass of a salt solution
that is made by dissolving 2.5 g of salt in 25.0 g
water?
% by mass = (2.5 g salt/2.5 g salt + 25.0 g
solvent) x 100
= 9. 1 %

2. What is the percent by volume of a 50 ml

solution made with 25 ml of methyl alcohol?
% by volume = (25 ml methyl alcohol/50 ml
alcohol) x 100
= 50%

3. Compute the percent by mass/volume of a

91.74 ml solution made by dissolving 10 g of salt
to 90 g of water.
% by mass/volume = (10 g salt/91.74 ml solution)
x 100
= 10.9%

4. How will you prepare a2% by mass of salt

solution? Assume that you will prepare 100 g of
the solution.
Let X = mass of solute
2% by mass = (X/ 100 g solution) x 100

Solving for X,
X = (2% by mass)(100 g of solution)/100
X = 2.0 g

To prepare 100 g of 2% salt solution, weigh 2.0 g

of salt. Place the salt in a container and add water
until the mass of the solution is 100 g
E. Application
“Now let’s have an activity, I’ll group you into 4
groups and try to solve the problem. I’ll give 5
minutes to do the activity”

Solve the following problems:

1. What is the percent by mass of sodium chloride
in a solution of 25.0 g table salt and 125.0 g
water?
2. A solution of methanol is prepared by
dissolving 35.0 ml of methanol in water to get a
115.0 ml solution. What is the concentration in
percent by volume of methanol?
3. What is the percent by mass/volume if 22 g of
KCl (Potassium chloride) is added to 75 ml of
water to make 83ml of solution
F. Generalization
“Do you understand our topic today class?”

“Again, what is solution?” “a homogenous mixture”

“What are the components to make a solution?” “solute and solvent”

“What is solute?” and What is solvent?

“So solution is classified into 3 and what are “unsaturated, saturated and

those called?” supersaturated”

“Very Good. That all for today. I hope you learn

something today”

IV. Evaluation

Direction: Prepare 1 whole sheet of paper and solve the following problems

1. What is the percent by mass of a solution that is composed of 5 g of salt for every 95 g of
water?

2. A solution made from 35 ml of ethanol and 65ml of water. What is the percent by volume
of ethanol?
3. If 250 g of sodium chloride is present in 3000 ml of solution, what is the percent mass by
volume of sodium chloride?

4. How would you make a 15% by mass of salt solution? Assume that you will prepare a 200g
of the solution?
