Comtemporary issues in leadership
• Charismatic Leadership- Max Weber a
sociologist was the first person to discuss
charismatic leadership.
• Charisma is a Greek word which means gift as a
certain quality of an individual personality by
virtue of which he or she is set apart from
others.
• The first researcher to consider charismatic
leadership in terms of OB was Robert House.
Key characteristics of charismatic leaders

• Vision Articulation- Expressed as an idealized goal.


• Personal Risk- Willing to take high risk.
• Sensitivity to followers needs- Perspective to others
abilities & responsive on their needs & feelings.
• Unconventional Behaviour- Engaged in behaviour that
are novel.
• Leader follower relationship- follower develops respect &
relies heavily on a leader whom they admire.
• Example- Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, Steve
Jobs, etc.
Tranformational vs Transactional Leadership

• Transactional Leaders- People who favour this style create


defined structure.
• The essence of transactional leadership is that people are
either motivated by rewards or punishment.
• They define clear chain of command.
• Follows the principle that boss has all the authority & sub-
ordinate has all the responsibility.
• Transactional leader has short term goals.
• It is the fact that all the leader uses transactional leadership to
a lesser or a greater extent.
• Example- Laxmi Mittal( CEO Mittal Steel)
Transformational Leaders
• Leaders are transformational when they increase the
awareness of what is right, good, important & beautiful.
• They help to elevate their followers needs for
achievement & self actualization.
• Caracteristics-

• Model Behaviour
