Reiki – A Definition

Page 2-4
What is Reiki – A Definition – page 3
• Reiki is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that
also promotes healing.
• It is a natural system of energy healing that is safe, non-
intrusive, gentle but powerful
• The process of giving a Reiki treatment is thought of as
"laying on of hands"
• Reiki is a holistic system for healing and can be used to help
restore balance and harmony to the whole person, including
the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of a
person
What is Reiki – A Definition – page 3
• Based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows
through everything in the universe and is what animates us and
causes us to be alive
• If a persons’ "life force energy" is low, blocked or stagnant, then
we are more likely to get sick or feel stress
• If it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy
• Origin depends on who you speak to, how you are trained, what
books you read and what you google
• Healing methods similar to reiki are identified in all cultures
and recorded histories over 5,000 years old
• Whatever and wherever reiki originated from I do believe we are
dealing with an ancient form of healing
What is Reiki – A Definition – page 3
• All systems of energy healing, hands on and remote healing
use aspects of the universal life force energy that permeates
the universe and our entire reality.
• This Energy is known by many names, Prana, Mana, Chi, KI,
Orgone energy, Bioenergetic plasma, Divine breath, Cosmic
Pulse, Vital Fire, the Ti or Ki of the Hawaiians, odic force, bio-
plasma and life force among them.
• Even in modalities and systems that call directly on spiritual
entities, Angels, Healing guides and so forth, the actual
healing is effected by aspects of the universal energy.
What is Reiki – A Definition – page 3
• Reiki also has elements based on the traditions of Asian
medicine and martial arts which have given rise to
acupuncture, chi gong, tai chi and other Holistic Medicine
and modes similar practices so it is:
• A fusion of spiritual healing and some traditional Asian
medical, spiritual and health practices.
• What can be proved though is that its’ rediscovery and
further refinement and development happened in Japan
around the time of the life of Dr. Mikao Usui.
What is Reiki – A Definition – page 4
• The word Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is composed of two Japanese words -
Rei and Ki.
• When seeking a definition from a spiritual context, Rei can be defined as
the:
• Higher Intelligence that guides the creation and functioning of the universe.
• Rei is a subtle wisdom that permeates everything, both animate and
inanimate and it guides the evolution of all creation ranging from the
unfolding of galaxies to the development of life.
• On a human level, it is available to help us in times of need and acts as a
source of guidance in our lives.
• Because of its infinite nature, it is all knowing and has been also called God
and has many other names depending on the culture that has named it.
What is Reiki – A Definition – page 4
• Ki is the non-physical energy that animates all living things, flowing
in everything that is alive including plants, animals and humans.
• When a person's Ki is high, they will feel strong, confident, and ready
to enjoy life and take on its’ challenges.
• When it is low, they will feel weak and are more likely to get sick.
• We receive Ki from the air we breathe, from food, sunshine, and
from sleep.
• It is also possible to increase our Ki by using breathing exercises and
meditation.
• When a person dies, their Ki leaves the physical body.
What is Reiki – A Definition – page 4
• With that above information in mind, Reiki can be defined as a:
• non-physical healing energy made up
of life force energy that is guided by
the Higher Intelligence,
• or:

• spiritually guided life force energy.

What is Reiki – A Definition – page 4
• Reiki energy seems to have an intelligence of its own flowing
where it is needed in the client and creating the healing
conditions necessary for the individuals’ needs.
• If the flow of Ki is disrupted, the associated physical organs
and tissues will be adversely affected eventually leading to
illness.
• Therefore, it is a disruption in the flow of Ki that is the main
cause of illness.
• Ki will flow more strongly or be weakened in its action
depending on the quality of ones’ thoughts and feelings.
What is Reiki – A Definition – page 4
• Therefore, it is a disruption in the flow of Ki that is the main cause of illness.
• Even Western medicine recognises the role played by the mind in
creating illness.
• Also, you will see that the mind or consciousness exists not only in the
brain, but also through-out the body.
• The nervous system extends to every organ and tissue in the body and
so the mind exists here also (mind-body).
• It is also known that the mind-body even extends outside the body in a
subtle energy field called the aura.
• So, our negative thoughts are not just in the brain, but also impact and
collect in various locations through-out the body and in the aura.
What is Reiki – A Definition – page 4
• The negative thoughts and feelings that are lodged in the
unconscious mind/body are a greater problem as we are less
aware of them and so, we are greatly hampered in changing
or eliminating them.
• Because reiki is guided by the higher intelligence, it knows
exactly where to go and how to respond to restrictions in the
flow of Ki
• As it flows through a sick or unhealthy area, it breaks up and
washes away any lodged negative thoughts or feelings
allowing a normal healthy flow of Ki to resume.
What is Reiki – A Definition – page 4
• Reiki is becoming more and more popular and as western medicine
continues to explore alternative methods of healing, Reiki is destined
to play an ever more important role as an accepted and valued healing
practice.
• In fact, Reiki is used in major hospitals throughout Great Britain, and in
hospitals in the USA, in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and beyond.
• In America, the Centre for Reiki Research has produced an amazingly
detailed directory of hospitals in the US that use Reiki and collated the
results of many clinical trials
• The UK Reiki Federation has an extensive list of hospitals using reiki on
their website
The History and the Practice of Reiki

Page 5 - 10
Is the History of Reiki Important? – page 5
• Over the years - so many changes to Reiki:
• its apparent history, how it’s applied
• the lineage, the emergence of different styles
• techniques being added or taken away
• different peoples’ personal opinion
• people’s own importance placed on old and/or new emerging information….
• history may seem to have been a bit diluted

• Do I think about the lineage, history, the differences in styles when I

have a client in practice…..no I don’t
• When I experience an improved quality or quantity or frequency of Reiki
that I can channel, then the origins and importance of precepts and the
Reiki way become more familiar and I feel more connected to Reiki.
Is the History of Reiki Important? – page 5
• Majority of current styles of reiki, including Tera Mai Reiki have
their origins in Usui Reiki Ryoho - Usui Reiki, the style practiced by
Usui
• Usui Reiki has become the predominant form of Reiki practiced
throughout the world….
• ….because of this, a thorough understanding of Usui Reiki,
including its origins, is important - will give us a foundation for
understanding Reiki, making it easier for us to connect with its
essence
• Reiki has a special essence that is self-guiding, and it imbues that
in those that use Reiki and in the people in receipt
Mikao Usui – page 6
• Mikao Usui was born August 15, 1865 in the village of Taniai
• Throughout his life maintained a strong interest in continuous
learning
• Travelled to Europe and China to further his education.
• Studies included medicine, religion and psychology
• the art of divination widely considered in Asia to be an important skill
• a member of a metaphysical group called the Rei Jyutu Ka dedicated to
developing psychic abilities.
• He had many jobs - civil servant and eventually became the
secretary to the head of the department of health and welfare
• who later became the mayor of Tokyo named Shinpei Goto.
Reiki Existed Before Usui’s Style – page 6
• Reiki existed before Usui’s style was created, thousands of years before
• Even around his time in the early 1900s, there were 4 other styles of
therapeutic Reiki for healing being practiced in Japan before Usui,
• 8 years prior to Usui developing his style (Usui Reiki Ryoho) Mataji
Kawakami created Reiki Ryoho in 1914
• Kawakami also authored a book called “Reiki Healing Hands and its
Effects” in 1919, 3 years before Usui’s experience on Mount Kurama
• The fact that Usui developed and called his style Usui Reiki Ryoho in
1922, seems to indicate he was aware that the other styles existed and
that his “Usui” style was indicating his as different, separate and his
own.
Usui’s The purpose of life – page 6
• Usui became inspired to direct his attention toward discovering the
purpose of life and in doing so, studied to attain a special state of
consciousness or enlightenment to reveal it and guide him to it
• Failed to achieve it after 3 years of studying Zazen meditation with a
Zen master and so he sought further guidance.
• The purpose of his trip to and time spent on Mount Kurama Yama
in March 1922 was not to seek or learn about healing, in fact he
went there on the advice of his Zen master to either:
• reach the state of consciousness or level of enlightenment
• through fasting and meditating
• or die in the process.
Usui’s The purpose of life – page 6
• Whilst on the mountain he
• had a spiritual experience and
• achieved a level of enlightenment where
• A great beam of Reiki came down through the top of his
head and he experienced a great sense of peace welling up
from within.
• This type of enlightenment also enabled him to see his
purpose in life and gave him guidance and the ability to carry
it out
• As the Story goes…….stubbed his toes
Usui - developing style & earthquake –
page 6
• During that experience Usui only got the healing energy and not
the symbols or the techniques
• These were established through his development of the practice,
techniques and system, most specifically in the time after the
Great Kanto earthquake and tsunami of 1923
• extensive damage in Tokyo
• killed 100,000 people and injured thousands more
• let alone all of the people who were sick and grieving.
• Usui went about helping and healing 6 people at a time, using his
hands and feet, his eyes (technique called Gyoshi ho) and his
breath
Usui - developing style & earthquake –
page 6
• Realising that because there were so many people in need
of healing, what he needed to do was to
• improve, speed up and further develop his style of teaching so
that he could train more people to help the sick.
• It is through the development and improvement of his
teaching process that he added:
• the use of symbols to make it easier for people to channel
energy and
• a formal attunement method (also called Reiju kai).
Usui – Style origins compared to today
page 7
• Usui used only 3 symbols (no master symbol)
• compared to the 4 symbols currently taught here in the west
• Usui used the same attunement for all levels
• compared to the different attunement for each of the 3 levels currently taught here in the
west
• Usuis’ style placed huge importance on receiving the attunements
• the same attunements over and over again.
• The purpose of this being that because Reiki comes from an unlimited source with
no limit to its quality or the quantity available one only needs to continuously refine
one’s ability to channel reiki, the only limitation in channeling this unlimited energy.
• The most important thing a student could do was to receive more and more
attunements to continuously open, purify and clear the channel so we can
channel ever higher frequencies of Reiki.
Usui – Style origins compared to today
page 7
• The motive of channeling ever higher frequencies of Reiki
can be considered the spiritual aspect of Reiki because:
• as we do this we connect more to the ultimate universal source of
Reiki or God,
• so if God or the supreme being is infinite and unlimited then the
potential of Reiki and its applications are the same.
• When we first receive our attunements, yes, we certainly do
have Reiki but that doesn’t mean that we have developed
our ability to channel the highest frequencies of reiki
• so increasing our ability to channel higher frequencies of reiki was
then and is now very important.
Japanese Reiki Techniques - page 7
• Usui also developed what we call in the west the Japanese Reiki Techniques:
• Byosen scanning
• used to detect where Reiki is needed and so to find the best hand positions
• Usui considered the second most important aspect of a students’ study and ability to be
continuously developed
• Gassho – meditation
• Reiji-ho - developing your intuition
• Gyoshi ho - sending Reiki with the eyes
• Koki ho – sending reiki using the breath
• Kenyoku - clearing one’s energy field
• Jacki-kiri Joka-ho - clearing objects of negative energy.
• The philosophy around this is that we could always open up our channel further and
purify our ability to receive higher frequencies of reiki.
3 Level System taught by Usui - page 7
• There were three levels to the system of Reiki taught by Usui.
• First level of his training was called Shoden (Self Healing/Basic Healing others)
• how to practise healing the self and the basics about helping others.
• First degree was divided into four levels: Loku-Tou, Go-Tou, Yon-Tou and San-Tou

• Second Level was Okuden (Inner Teaching)

• three mantras and three symbols that aid in focusing the energy.
• Second degree had two levels: Okuden-Zen-ki and Okuden-Koe-ki.

• Third level was called Shinpiden (Mystery Teaching)

• focused on personal development
• taught the student how to perform attunements (Western Reiki calls Master level)
• Third degree included Shihan-Kaku (assistant teacher) and Shihan (venerable teacher).
Usui After 1923 and death in 1926 - page 7
• Following is work in the aftermath of the Great Kanto
earthquake in 1923, demand for Reiki became so great that
Usui outgrew his clinic
• In 1925 he built a bigger one in Nakano, Tokyo and his
reputation as a healer spread all over Japan.
• The Japanese government even honoured him by issuing him
a Kun San To award for doing honourable work to help others.
• He began travelling to teach and treat more people and whilst
traveling to Fukuyama to teach, he suffered a stroke and died
on March 9, 1926.
Dr. Chujiro Hayashi - page 8
• Usuis’ last student was also a trained medical doctor
• Usui recognised the potential of this and asked him before he died to
develop Reiki and take it further
• Hayashi created his own institute and left the Gakkai
• (a healing society that Usui started in Tokyo In April 1922, the purpose of which was to
maintain the methods that Usui practiced
• Further refined the attunement process - more efficient
• Changed the way treatments were given – (chair to gurney)
• Began to teach Reiki 1 and 2 together over 5 days
• with one attunement and 3 hours of practice every day
• Still emphasised the importance of receiving frequent attunements
whenever possible to continue to refine the reiki channel.
Hawayo Takata: Into The West - page 8
• One of Hayashis’ students was a Hawaiian lady called Hawayo Takata who
was born in 1900
• Discovered Reiki whilst in Japan when her own health was challenged
• Attended, trained and later worked in Hayashis’ clinic in Tokyo
• She returned to Hawaii, followed by Hayashi and they travelled around
Hawaii giving classes, talks and treatments and she became a Reiki master
in 1938.
• She became a well-known and powerful healer and travelled to the U.S.
mainland and other parts of the world teaching, initiating people to reiki
and giving treatments.
• Takata had her own unique way of practicing and teaching over the next 40
years
Hawayo Takata: Into The West - page 8 &
9
• Takata changed the system Hayashi taught to her own
• Hayashi system too complicated for the western mind - simplified it
• Reduced hand placements to just 8 hand placements
• Did not teach any of the Japanese reiki Techniques
• Byosen scanning considered second most important by Usui
• Had a different attunement for each level which powered the symbols
• Added that she taught a master symbol
• Today’s master symbol is an important symbol in Japanese spiritualism and
Buddhism, used as chants in some ceremonies and is also the name of a
temple in Japan so maybe Takata had familiarised herself with the symbol
when she was there.
Hawayo Takata: Into The West - page 9
• Without Takata Reiki would have been lost.
• After the end of World War two Japan had to unconditionally surrender
to the U.S.A and the U.S.A took charge of everything in Japan,
• In order to practice as a healer you had to be licensed.
• Some healers such as acupuncturists decided to go ahead and get licenced
• The Gakkai decided not to
• instead they decided to become an underground society who practiced and
talked about Reiki only among themselves
• In effect Reiki and the Gakkai disappeared
• Western Reiki practitioners later would go to Japan and teach the
western style there.
Hawayo Takata: Into The West - page 9
• One thing you can say about Reiki and its origins and history
is that it has certainly developed over time
• From the fact that there were Reiki styles and systems in
Japan before and during Usuis’ time
• From Usuis style to Hayashi’s and to Takata’s change in style
• This continuous development is a trend that continues to
take place even now.

• Lets get closer to the true essence of Reiki itself

The Essence of Reiki – Contact - page 10
• We begin to become familiar with the essence of reiki when
• we are in contact with the reiki energy,
• when we treat ourselves and others
• when we teach classes………….the Reiki energy is present.
• From this we can sense and feel and meditate on what is contained
within the Reiki energy, the Reiki essence itself
• In coming into contact with it many people
• feel peace and love
• begin to foster higher spiritual qualities
• We can also see that Reiki energy respects free will,
• I can complete the attunement process over and over all day long but if you do
not want it within the sphere of your own free will it will not be effective.
The Essence of Reiki & Free Will- page 10
• Free will is so important and it forms the foundation of higher consciousness.
• To try to impose a higher consciousness on someone without the foundation of their free
will to do so would actually hold them back
• When people allow themselves to be healed by Reiki, they are willing to release
the ego & ego attachments, then we find that Reiki will allow for the development
of special qualities. Reiki can
• Refine and upgrade a persons’ personality, where they can begin to develop patience, a love
of themselves and others,
• become less competitive, less judgmental and more accepting of other people,
• they develop forgiveness and gratitude
• develop the relationship we have with the source of reiki, increasing our connection to
whatever ultimate consciousness you subscribe to if any.
• This also helps develop an ever-increasing state of safety within people as they realise Reiki
is essentially looking out for us, creating a path for us and carving out a safe future for us
where we develop the healthiest personality traits.
The Reiki Principles

Page 11 - 20
The Reiki Principles - page 11
• After Usuis’ death in 1926 a memorial stone was erected in 1927 in
Tokyo in memory of him
• The inscription on the stone was written by a teacher trained by
Usui and who succeeded him as president of the Gakkai
• This inscription has formed the basis of much of the
understanding of who Miao Usui was and the history of Usui Reiki.
• The inscription also makes reference to a series of guidelines
formulated by the Meiji Emperor of Japan (1868 – 1912) that were
• adopted by Usui and to this day are seen as suitable guidelines by
most Reiki practitioners to how best to live in the now
The Reiki Principles - page 11
• These guidelines are now the known to most Reiki practitioners as the reiki
principles for:
• how best to live in the now,
• to not remain a prisoner of the past nor
• spoil the experience of now by living in the future
• to live your life with integrity that recognises the divinity in everything and in every person.
• These are:
• Don’t get angry today
• Don’t worry today
• Be Grateful today
• Work hard today
• Be Kind to others today
The Reiki Principles - page 11
• Meiji Emperors’ precepts (general rules intended to regulate
behaviour or thought) may mirror various other common sets of
ethical precepts or guidelines that everyone can live by to
promote a healthy, loving way of living.
• It may seem a bit overwhelming to change ourselves in order to
live by all five of these principles immediately and every single
day, however it is worth expanding on the Reiki Principles so you
can
• begin to align with their relevance in todays’ world
• see how and where they can be applied in your life
• Maybe even start today by focusing your awareness on just one.

First…. A bit about stress - page 12
• Stress is just the body's response to changes that create taxing
demands but there is a difference between eustress (positive
stress) and distress (negative stress)
• Eustress, or positive stress, or beneficial stress (whether
psychological, physical, or biochemical) is any kind of stress that is
experienced as positive or that promotes well-being.
• This can be characterised as that which motivates, focuses energy,
is short-term and perceived to be within our coping abilities.
• It feels exciting and improves performance. Examples:
• New Job, having a child, learning new classes, buying a home
• holiday, promotion, getting married, moving house, holiday seasons
First…. A bit about stress - page 12
• Distress, or negative stress, can be characterised as that
which
• causes anxiety or concern, can be short- or long-term and
perceived as outside of our coping abilities.
• It feels unpleasant, decreases performance and can lead to
mental and physical problems. Examples
• Separation from a partner, divorce or death, Losing contact with
loved ones, The death of a family member, Hospitalisation, illness
or injury (you or family), Being abused or neglected
• Excessive job demands, Job insecurity, Conflicts with teammates
and supervisors
First…. A bit about stress - page 12
• Stressors may not always be limited to situations outside of ourselves,
our own thoughts and feelings and habitual behaviours can also cause
distress such as
• fears and phobias,
• limited and repetitive thinking patterns,
• worrying about the future,
• unrealistic or perfectionist expectations and procrastination.
• How we experience stress is very subjective and personal to each person
• It is how we respond to stress that determines whether we profit from
misfortune or be miserable
• Awareness of this can enable us to begin the task of choosing our
response to this rather than just automatically reacting to it.
First…. A bit about stress - page 12

Just for today, I will not worry- page 13
• For most of us, stress is an inherent part of our daily lives and
• for some of us it’s a major issue whether we experience this acutely or
whether we are silently suffering from its’ chronic impact on our energy,
physiology, mental and emotional states and our quality of life.
• Often, we are juggling and managing a whole myriad of calendars,
appointments, meetings, shoulds, shouldn’ts, to do’s and problems to
solve.
• So, if we cannot do something about a problem today then there is no
point in worrying.
• If we can do something about a problem today do it and then we will
have no cause to worry.
Just for today, I will not worry- page 13
• Not to mention, the benefit to our health from lowering our stress.
• When we worry, we might forget that we are connected with the
unlimited energy of reiki, its essence and all its potential,
essentially to universal love.
• Use Reiki to reduce your worries and improve your thinking
patterns, the more we allow that energy to flow through us the
more we become open to experience ourselves as part of a safe
and loving universe.
• So just for today, do what you can and then trust yourself and
know that everything is going to work out.
Just for today, I will not be angry- page 13
• Each stressor, whether acute or chronic can trigger a cascade of stress
hormones that produce well- orchestrated and superfast physiological
changes within the body, making the heart pound, breath quicken,
muscles tense, etc, also known as the "fight-or-flight" (and also freeze)
response because it evolved as a survival mechanism, enabling people
and other mammals to react quickly to life- threatening situations.
• These days we are not faced with being chased up the main street in
Lusk by the sabre-toothed tiger or the hangry bear but our limbic
system, amygdala and hypothalamus hasn’t caught up with this fact
and unfortunately the body can now also overreact to stressors that
are not life-threatening, such as traffic jams on the M50, work
pressure, and family difficulties.
Just for today, I will not be angry- page 13
• Once our bodies and consciousness perceive the stressor or
stressors through our senses or even in our minds, our
amygdala sends a distress signal to the hypothalamus which
activates the sympathetic nervous system by sending signals
through the autonomic nerves to the adrenal glands, which
respond by pumping the hormone epinephrine (also known as
adrenaline) into the bloodstream.

• Now just think about this for a minute, how many times even in
a given day do we personally experience stressors like the ones
mentioned, even if we just are thinking about them
Just for today, I will not be angry- page 13
• Now think about the fact that each time we even think about one of these stressors, our physiology
reacts at some level to it…..that’s a lot right?
• Also consider our intake of substances that often increase stress and anger, such as sugar, caffeine,
excess food and nicotine.

• Over time, repeated and prolonged activation of the stress response takes a toll on the body
contributing to
• high blood pressure
• promoting the formation of artery-clogging deposits
• causing brain changes that may contribute to anxiety, depression, and even addiction. Research also

• Research also suggests that chronic stress may also contribute to obesity, both directly (causing
people to eat more) or indirectly (decreasing sleep and exercise).
• We often keep somewhat of a lid on it which ends up being blown off over something quite
innocuous like being cut off by another driver on our way to work and we probably default to anger.
Just for today, I will not be angry- page 13
• So for today do not anger… of course we have to address the
balance through exercise, healthy eating, mindfulness, walks,
yoga, pilates, reiki treatments, quality time with family and in
nature and doing things that bring us joy and in the moment
when we get cut off in traffic, why not just take a deep
breath, relax, forgive and let it go.
• What will you achieve by remaining angry and cutting him off
to "get back at him?" nothing. All that you'll end up with is an
elevated heart rate and more stress which is not good for
your well-being
Just for today, I will not be angry- page 14
• This doesn’t mean to keep anger bottled up inside or to pretend that it isn't there. But
don’t let anger consume you.
• Use reiki to become more aware of yourself and to change your stinking thinking.
• Remember that energy flows where intention goes and we attract all of that which we
experience in life.
• If you have experienced an angry situation, avoid thinking through the wounded ego, be
subjective and look at yourself as an energetic being and seek what aspect of you has
attracted that situation and what could be the learning from it.
• The anger might not have felt good but regardless how we judge it, it is certainly rich in
experience and opportunities to learn.
• We attract to ourselves that which we are, and
• what you hold in mind tends to manifest
• so when you can look at the situation that you react to with anger you can often uncover
information about yourself and your expectations.
Just for today, I will not be angry- page 14
• Something I took from a book I read years ago called
Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsch about
choosing to create a response to something rather than just
reacting to it was that “REACTIVE” and “CREATIVE” are the
same 8 letters, it just depends on how you “C” it. The soul
creates, the mind reacts so become a Creator, rather than
Reactor.
Just for today, I will be Grateful- page 15
• Cultivating an attitude of feeling blessed for all that you have and experience and
also feeling joy for the benefits and blessings of others seems like common sense
and a general way of life that’s easy to comprehend as good and nurturing and
positive.
• But in a world where it is also so common to want something else or more, is it hard
to cultivate, maintain and practice gratitude?
• If we continuously want, then we programme ourselves to want. If want is a
predominant energy that we send out to the universe then that is what we will get
back…. more experience of wanting, remember:
• we attract to ourselves that which we are, and
• what you hold in mind tends to manifest.
• Like attracts like and lack attracts lack,
• so staying positive and grateful for what you have and what you are is a way of life
that will attract more blessings into your life
Just for today, I will be Grateful- page 15
• Studies in all fields of science including psychiatry,
psychology and more show that being thankful has many
positive results in many aspects of our lives.
• Physiologically it improves our physical and emotional health
• boosts our immune system
• Increases blood supply to our heart,
• Increases alertness, enthusiasm, energy and improves our sleep.
• Reduces the stress hormone cortisol
• In other words, these findings suggest that people with an
“attitude of gratitude” experience lower levels of stress.
Just for today, I will be Grateful- page 15
• Simply being grateful for being alive is a great way to motivate oneself to
seize the day.
• The idea that tomorrow is not guaranteed can be a strong motivator for
some people.
• So maybe we can be grateful for
• just being, and being alive right now
• for everything that is alive right now
• for all of the experiences that we continue to have in this human life
• not just the ones that made us laugh and smile and feel joy, but all of the
other experiences that in the past we judged as negative
• the other souls involved who are on their journey too.
Just for today, I will be Grateful- page 16
• So, philosophers have suggested that gratitude is one of the most
important human emotions for the success of the society, and
• Religious and spiritual thinkers have suggested that it is a crucial
aspect of religious and spiritual life.
• Modern psychology research confirms that gratitude is an important
social emotion that can benefit the lives of people who practice it,
and that practicing gratitude itself can also benefit other people.
• Physiology shows the benefits of practicing gratitude are powerful
and suggest it’s perfect for reducing stress and anxiety.
• Actually, on paper it seems harder to not be thankful as we have
every reason to be. We just need to practice it more and more
Just for today, I do my work honestly-
page 17
• that “honest work” is not just job related but in the sense of spiritual wholeness
• it is widely considered that Usui was also directing this towards meditation and similar spiritual
practices as work.
• Also, we are not just talking about being honest with others here, the most important person you must
be honest with is yourself.
• Without honesty, we live in disaccord with reality, which bears a myriad of hidden problems.
• Honesty is truth, and refers to the accurate perception of ourselves, each other, and the outside world.
• We can only heal to the degree that we are honest, for what goes unnoticed, especially inside us, will
remain largely unchanged.
• Our true essence and our spirituality are no exceptions and so let’s illuminate them using the light of
honesty, which will
• bring clarity to some ideas of our reality,
• aid in getting to know ourselves on a deeper level and
• facilitate living a more conscious life.
• This may begin with just asking yourself some tough questions, which may be difficult or
uncomfortable now but will have an immense payoff in the enjoyment of your life.
Just for today, I do my work honestly-
page 17
•In your life right now, are you doing what you want to do, that which fills you with joy
and aligns with the true aspects of your being? If not, why not?
•Being incarnate on earth gives our soul the divine opportunity to live our souls’ mission
which is perfectly aligned with that souls’ evolution, growth and learning, which in turn
is an important role of a higher plan that affects all souls.
•The souls’ mission includes many aspects including:
• delighting in the experience of the miracle of the human sensory perception
• developing wisdom from learning something and then teaching to others
• building spiritual mastery through continuously returning to the state of love after
every event in which we encounter fear
• serving others in a way that’s perfect and joy-filled
• experiencing pure joy by cultivating love and joy in the souls’ life and that of others.
Just for today, be kind to every living thing
- page 18
•What you give out, you receive back tenfold.
•Be nice, loving and caring to everyone and everything
•we all deserve love and kindness.
•Being aware of ourselves as part of an interconnected whole and understanding
that what we put into life is what returns to us.
•When we are not worrying or being angry and are grateful for our life and work we
will naturally be kind.
•The repeated call just for today reminds us to live in the present.

•To look at what it means to be kind to every living thing we need to further explore
our interconnectedness, the mechanics and power of our thoughts, feelings and
actions and our influence on the kindness we co-create and experience in this
world.
Universal Energy Field - page 18
•We live in a sea of energy, called the Universal Energy Field (UEF).
•Quantum physics/mechanics, including quantum field theory, is a
fundamental theory in physics which
• describes nature at the smallest scales of energy at the levels of atoms and
subatomic particles and it refers to this field of possibilities as the “Quantum
Soup.”
•Here in the west we refer to a life force, but no matter what we call
it, it is still the same energy that powers all living organisms, is the
“stuff” of the Universe and only realises its potential when in motion.
•Third Law of Hermetic Wisdom:
• “Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates.”
The Law of Vibration- page 19
•ancient concept that forms the basis for many contemporary
scientific observations and theories and states that:

• anything that exists in our universe, whether seen or unseen,

broken down into and analysed in its’ purest and most basic form,
consists of pure energy or light which resonates and exists as a
vibratory frequency or pattern.

•Science reveals that everything in the manifest universe is ultimately

composed of packets of energy; quantum units vibrating at specific
frequencies.
The Law of Vibration- page 19
•Light, heat, magnetism, and electricity all exist because of vibration.

•According to the First law of Sympathetic Vibratory Physics,

• vibration is the beginning of all matter.

•Quantum physics shows that, although matter may appear to be

solid, when you look at it through a high-powered microscope so
that it is broken down into its smallest components: molecules,
atoms, neutrons, electrons and quanta (the smallest particles
measurable), it is ultimately mostly empty space interspersed with
energy.
Energy and Empty Space - page 19
•Atoms consist of an atomic nucleus surrounded by a cloud of electrons
• whilst almost all the mass is contained in the nucleus, it is incredibly tiny compared
to the size of an atom.
•Imagine a football in front of you, if this were a nucleus then the cloud of
electrons would stretch out to a kilometre away.
• Even imagining an atom on this size and scale, the electrons would still be incredibly
tiny, like specks of dust and there wouldn't be many
•So, now imagine a giant sphere centred on the atomic nucleus stretching
out all the way out to a kilometre in every direction with just a few points
of dust in it.
•That's an atom and that means that matter is almost entirely empty
space
Energy and Empty Space - page 19
•So, everything is comprised of energy and empty space.
•Everything that appears solid is the frequency of the vibration of the
energy that makes it up.
•The lower the frequency, the more physically dense the form.
•A form that is more refined and subtle has a higher or faster vibratory
rate.
•The frequency of the vibration determines its form and so….
•If you change the frequency of the vibration, you will alter the form
• “Every thought, feeling, and emotion creates a molecule known as a neuropeptide.
• Neuropeptides travel throughout your body and hook onto receptor sites of cells and neurons.
• Your brain takes in the information, converts it into chemicals, and lets your whole body know if there's trouble in the world or
cause for celebration.
• Your body is directly influenced as these molecules course through the bloodstream, delivering the energetic effect of whatever
your brain is thinking and feeling.” – DEEPAK CHOPRA
Energy and Empty Space - page 20
•All matter, thoughts and feelings and actions have their own vibrational
frequency.
•What your conscious mind habitually dwells on becomes firmly imbedded
within the subconscious mind and becomes the dominant vibration
•Dominant vibration sets up a resonance with other similar vibrations and draws
them into your life.
•Every thought that you have causes a reaction in the brain, triggering a response
in the endocrine system causing physiological changes in your body.
• This too contributes to your dominant vibrations.
•Your vibrational frequency pings out to the universe affecting everything
around you
• – your environment, the people and animals around you, the inanimate objects, even the
seemingly ‘empty’ space and they, in turn, affect you.
The Law of Attraction - page 20
•Your vibrational frequency at every given moment pings out to the universe
affecting everything around you and attracts that of a similar frequency so….
•Thoughts, feelings and actions which you might judge as positive will attract
positive circumstance and judge as negative will attract negative circumstances.
•We are co-creators of that which we experience in life
• we can manifest that which we desire but also that which we may consider as negative.
•To impact and change our negative experiences we have to change how we
think and feel to attract that which we would rather experience.

•Expressing kindness through thoughts, feelings and actions is probably one of

the best ways to get your dominant frequencies working in a positive direction
•also physically uplifts the giver via “feel good” neurotransmitters released in the
brain
The Law of Attraction - page 20
•It takes courage, the cultivation of a non-judgmental, neutral mindset plus a
willingness to accept the other for who and what they are to commit random
acts of kindness
•Every living thing around us are threads that make up the rich tapestry of life
and are all made more or less of the same stuff.
• You = billion, billion, billion carbon atoms
•We are connected though time and space and we are not separate from the
whole, the past is all around us.
• Darwin - all individual organisms are connected through time & have incredible chemical
similarities
• Vladimir Vernadsky showed us that organisms are connected through space.
• The carbon dioxide we exhale as a waste product becomes the life-giving force for a plant; in turn, the oxygen
waste of a plant gives us life.
The Law of Attraction - page 20
•What we send out we get back tenfold
•So just for today, to be kind to every living thing:
• be mindful of your thoughts and feelings and
• use them to radiate kindness to others, even without physically doing
something for the other.
•Just by broadcasting positive thoughts, maybe you can make someone’s
present moment more joyful and by doing so you will be contributing to the
level of joy in the global consciousness.
“Kindness in words creates confidence.
Kindness in thinking creates profoundness.
Kindness in giving creates love.”
– Lao Tzu
How Reiki Works

Page 21 - 27
How Reiki Works – An opinion in flux -
page 21
•it’s something to do with energy flowing out of someones’ hands.
•To reconcile this concept with a lot of other aspects of their human experience:
• science that they learned in school
• religion that they have identified with probably since their childhood is not easy.
• Reiki and energy therapy in general are also relatively young
• in terms of practicable concepts that have existed over here in the western world only since Takata brought
them to Hawaii and then the U.S. after she became a Reiki master in 1938.
• This coupled with the inability to tangibly reach out and see, touch and explore with our
senses in order to understand it also compounds the task of understanding it.
•New information about reiki continues to come to light
•New means of measurement are being introduced
•People have more access to information
•and so the understanding of the essence of Reiki and its applications is
constantly in flux
How Reiki Works – An opinion in flux -

•Applying our limited human mind and the confines of language to grasp and
apply the correct terminology to something that
•is a universal life force that….
•animates everything in the universe and……
•has an innate intelligence and…...
•unlimited potential
•seems like an exercise in futility in terms of scale and accuracy and
comprehensiveness
How Reiki Works – An opinion in flux -
page 21
•Reiki is now being recognised throughout the scientific community as something
tangible and measurable which scientifically can be understood to an extent,
especially when we consider the universe from a quantum perspective.
•Following on from the section in this manual about
• energy and empty space,
• the laws of vibration and attraction and
• the universal energy field,
•scientists are now realising that the answer to the question of life and our
physical perception lies in the energetic make up of all things.
•Einstein himself in his expression of his famous equation E=mc², which in lay-
mans’ terms means energy is equal to mass multiplied by the speed of light
shows, that in fact, all matter is energy, and everything is made up of energy.
Beyond our sphere of perception - page
21/22
•What we perceive as solid, is in fact not, it is a question of frequency.
•Within our limited basic five senses, we are only able to perceive a fraction of
these vibrations.
•Science tells us that there are frequencies infinitely beyond our sphere of
perception. In simple terms consider the use of a dog whistle
•“light-beings”, having a “light-body”, “We’re all Beings of Light”,
•Most of us perceive each other as clearly physical rather than clearly light.
•We may intellectually accept the idea that we are ‘light’, but what does the
phrase actually mean? What is Light anyway?

•‘Light’ is a name for a part of a spectrum called the ‘electromagnetic spectrum’

•‘Light’ is a name for a part of a spectrum called the ‘electromagnetic spectrum’

Beyond our sphere of perception - page
21/22
•The electromagnetic spectrum:
• Is the range of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation and their respective wavelengths
and photon energies.
• Covers electromagnetic waves with frequencies ranging from
• below one hertz to above 1025 hertz, corresponding to
• wavelengths from thousands of kilometres down to a fraction of the size of an atomic
nucleus.
•This frequency range is divided into separate bands, and the electromagnetic
waves within each frequency band are called by different names;
•At the low-frequency (long wavelength) end of the spectrum:
• radio waves, microwaves, terahertz waves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays,
•At the high-frequency (short wavelength) end:
• Gamma rays
Beyond our sphere of perception - page
21/22
•‘Visible light’, the light we see as colours, or as ‘white light’ (all the colours
together), makes up only 0.0001% of the whole electromagnetic spectrum.
•That’s one thousandth of a percent.
•We actually cannot see, with the naked eye, 99.999% of what is in the world
around us.
•The electromagnetic spectrum is really an energy spectrum and is simply a
‘measuring stick’ for measuring waves of different lengths and frequencies.
•So, when we say, ‘we are Beings of Light’ we really mean ‘Beings of Energy’.
•The energy, or light, we usually perceive is in the range of physical vibrations,
• so we may perceive a person as a ‘physical object’, but even the substance of the physical
body is energy, and therefore part of the same spectrum as light.
Himalayas & Biophotons – page 23
•It’s easy for us to forget how amazing & highly improbable it is that we exist
•The universe began 13.7 billion years ago and today is filled with over 100 billion
galaxies, each containing hundreds of billions of stars.
•The Himalayas haven't always been mountains. Himalayan limestone is made
up primarily out of the bodies, the shells, of dead sea creatures, coral
•So, the Himalayas were once living creatures. Much of the rock in the
Himalayas was formed at the bottom of an ocean and then, over millions of
years, it was raised up, to become the vast peaks of today.
•Fossils have even been found at the top of Mount Everest.
•It's a beautiful example of the endless recycling of the earth's resources that has
been going on since the dawn of time and we are part of that system.
Himalayas & Biophotons – page 23
•Every atom in your body was once part of something else,
• an ancient tree or a dinosaur and definitely, a rock.
•And the reason that the rocks of the Earth can become living things and then
living things will return to rocks - everything made of same basic ingredients.
•Those ingredients are the chemical elements, the building blocks of everything
on Earth, like the ones from the periodic table
•Everything in the universe is made of 92 chemical elements, all made in dying
stars, just assembled in different ways
•When you heat the elements, then they give off light and each element gives off
its own unique set of colours
•Rainbow is a spectrum of the light from the sun in the sky, which when looked at
in detail can show you exactly what the sun is elementally composed of
Himalayas & Biophotons – page 23
•Consider then that
• we are made of the same stuff as the stars and the galaxies,
• Human body is formed from light, air, water, basic minerals and basic elements
• Within that body exists a soul capable of comprehending its physical and spiritual origins
• We exist + our bodily incarnation + our earthly existence is partially formed from sunlight
and requires the continual consumption of condensed sunlight in the form of food,
•……it may not sound so farfetched that our body emits light.

•Then consider that Science agrees with direct human experience:

• we are more than the atoms and molecules that make up our bodies, but beings of light
• scientific research can now show that Biophotons are emitted by the human body,
• can be released through mental intention and
• may modulate (regulate or adjust) fundamental processes within cell-to-cell
communication and DNA.
Himalayas & Biophotons – page 24
•Scientifically proven that are about 100,000 chemical reactions happening in
every cell in the body each second.
•The chemical reaction can only happen if reacting molecule is excited by a
photon, thus….
• Every cell in the body emits more than 100,000 light impulses or photons/sec
•These light emissions, by all living things, are called biophotons and have been
found to be the steering mechanism behind all biochemical reactions.
•Biophotons (literally meaning biological light) are photons of light in the
ultraviolet and low visible light range, produced by a biological system
• have been observed and measured using specialized equipment since 1970s,
•German biophysicist Fritz-Albert Popp proved the existence of the biophoton
field in 1974, believes that these types of "biophoton emissions" are responsible
for transferring information throughout your entire body
Himalayas & Biophotons – page 24
•Popp also proved that light in your body is stored by, and emitted from, your
DNA.
•The DNA inside each cell vibrates at a frequency of several billion hertz caused
by the coil-like contraction and extension of your DNA,
• which occurs several billion times per second
• every time it contracts, it squeezes out one single biophoton.
•That photon contains all information on everything going on in your DNA at
that moment.
•One single biophoton
• can carry more than four megabytes of information and
• relays this information to other biophotons it crosses in biophoton field outside your body.
•Since that time over 30 peer-reviewed academic research papers on biophotons
have been published in publicly indexed scientific journals.
The Fascia - An Energetic Superhighway – page
24
•Fascia is a thin, densely woven, tough, elastic type of connective tissue and a
specialized system of the body
•Fascia covers and interpenetrates every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and vein, all
of our internal organs including the heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord.
•It is not just a system of separate coverings but one continuous structure that
exists from head to toe without interruption.
•The myofascial system carries signals in the form of tiny electrical light impulses
called biophotons (the smallest sparks of conscious energy), carrying the very
building blocks of life and allows all cells to communicate with one another
•In this way you can begin to see that each part of the entire body is connected
to every other part by the fascia, like a sort of energetic superhighway.
The Fascia - An Energetic Superhighway – page
24
•The myofascial system has seven major points where there is much more fascia
than in other areas which….
•….Correspond to the seven main energy centres, or more commonly as chakras
•It stands to reason that if there is more fascia in these areas where the mesh of
tubes is much thicker, creating a larger energy hot spot, so to speak, then more
biophotons would be found here.
•We know now that energy, carrying messages and information, is
• constantly moving throughout physical body & electromagnetic fields in the form of light
• This light is everywhere and in everything, vibrating at different speeds as was previously
mentioned, and imperceptible to the limited capabilities of our basic five senses
•In a standard Reiki treatment, it is with these areas that the practitioner will
work with the most.
The Reiki Practitioner’s Role – page 24
•Reiki practitioner will have gone through proper attunements with Reiki master.
•Remember, Usuis’ style placed a huge importance to
• continuously refine one’s ability to channel reiki, the only limitation in channelling this
unlimited energy open,
• purify and clear the channel for ever higher frequencies of Reiki.
•This facilitates a connection to higher frequencies with which they are able to
channel energy through their own electromagnetic field into the
electromagnetic field and physical body of the recipient.
•By connecting to higher or finer frequencies of conscious energy which is all
around us, and using loving intention or thought (which, as stated before, is also
energy) to heal and cleanse, the Reiki practitioner is able to direct the energy to
where it is most needed or where the reikis’ ultimate intelligence and
knowledge directs it.
The Reiki Practitioner’s Role – page 25
•But Reiki will go where it is needed regardless of where the practitioner places
their hands, or in the case of distance Reiki, across any space to the desired
recipient.
•Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and
charging them with positive energy.
•It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body
where the energy blockages are.
•This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away.
•In so doing, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus
allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.
Reiki works via our Intention – page 25
•Our overall dominant frequencies contribute to our own bio-magnetic field
which attracts like to like and as in all energy, can be manipulated and
channelled, through consciously ensuring our thoughts and feelings are positive,
in other words that our intention is positive
•It is also recognised, that all thought is energy and so if intention has the power
to manipulate energy, then could it be that what we think is what we are?
• If we consciously or sub-consciously consume or accept something with a negative intention
or energetic vibration, it can create a negative response in our physical, mental, emotional
or spiritual bodies
• Buddha - “The mind is everything, what we think we become”
•This negative response could then logically create dis-ease within our bodies
which can be healed with positive intention, so intention is one of the aspects of
how Reiki works
Intention – page 25
•When we set an intention, it is not the same as making a wish and waiting for
the wish to be granted.
•When we set an intention, we:
• acknowledge the flow from that intention, through us and into the world.
• acknowledge that we are setting our energy to a state where our thoughts, words and
actions will now begin to shift and follow through to the fulfilment of that intention, even if
we don’t know how that will happen.
• set the course for our energy to begin to shift in the ways it needs to for the intention to
come to be, to the extent that we are ready and open to it.
•This brings change to our minds, hearts and lives. It changes our energy.
•Often, we don’t know how the end result of our intention will come to be.
• It may seem so big or so far away from where we are now that we can’t imagine it clearly,
or
• don’t know the steps to get there.
Intention – page 25
•Consciously setting an intention is a way of accepting responsibility for our life
and for the power we have over it.
•If we set intentions for something to come to us or for a change to happen in
our life but are unwilling to do or change anything in ourselves or our life to
allow that to happen, then we are blocking the intentions we set.
•Both allowing and taking action are important to creative change.
•The only one in charge of your energy and your life is you.
•By being open to allowing change and to taking action to bring your intentions
into being, you take full responsibility and control of your life.
• That can be a little frightening at first, but it is a great feeling when you step into it.
Intention – page 25
•To use intention to expand your heart and your awareness, especially in service
to others is a wonderful thing, and will serve you in the end.
•This is very much what we do when we set an intention for healing at the
beginning of a healing session.
• We intend to be present for the client in a loving way, with an open heart, and allow
healing energy to flow through.
•The intention is that the session be for their highest good and highest healing,
• though we don’t know what that may be or what the outcome will look like.
•We don’t know the path the healing will take, either in the short term or in the
long term.
•In order for the healing to be most effective, both the healer and the client must
be open to change, expansion and possible action.
Intention – page 25
•It is so important to have the receiver of the reiki treatment set the intention.
•As a practitioner every client is different so if you feel it’s the right thing to do,
tell them what an intention is and how it differs from a wish and allow them to
set the intention so that in doing so:

•They set the course for their energy to begin to shift

• in the ways it needs to for the intention to come to be, to the extent that
•They are ready and open to it and
•It brings change to their minds, hearts and lives.

•It changes their energy

Summary of how Reiki works? – page 26
•We know that:
•Everything is simply vibrating energy, our bodies and our thoughts
•Reiki is the life force energy that surrounds and permeates everything and
vibrates at a higher frequency
•We are beings of light, that produce our own dominant bio-energetic frequency
•Illness, depression, chaos, fear in fact everything that we perceptionally judge as
negative is simply energy vibrating at a lower than normal frequency for us
•In the presence of a higher rate of vibration, the frequency of these negative
aspects are raised, like pouring boiling water onto cold.
•Reiki works via the power of intention both that of the practitioner and that of
the receiver.
Summary of how Reiki works? – page 26
•We also know that:
•Once a practitioner has been attuned and maintains a clear and refined reiki
channel that they can channel this beautiful energy into the of the receiver and
•Once there, reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus
allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.
•New evidence shows that energy, light and so reiki can flow through the fascia
of the body.

•Seems like the perfect time to dive to a deeper understanding of how reiki
works by looking at the more traditional explanation of the energetic systems
of the body
Energetic systems of the body

Page 27 - 55
Energetic systems of the body – page 27
•Right, so we know that for thousands of years, an approach of Eastern medicine
has focused on the relationship between
• the energy of the Universal Energy Field (UEF), called Ki, Chi, Prana, the force, etc and
• the electromagnetic energy field of the human body, the Aura or Human Energy Field
(HEF).
•This energy flows
• in and out of the body through swirling cone-shaped vortexes called Chakras
• through the body via major pathways called meridians and nadis and
• between the meridians via channels.
•As we journey through our lives, this flow of energy can become limited or
restricted (energy blockages) caused by energy imprints from situations that
were too much for our system to safely experience.
• can limit our experience of life, deplete our energy and zest for life and can also result of
course in disease
•Reiki practitioners support bodys’ natural ability to rebalance flow of energy
The Aura – Human Energy Field – page 27
•In Latin/Ancient Greek = wind, breeze or breath (English "gentle breeze“) 11-1500
•Used in spiritualist circles - Subtle emanation around body by end of the 1800’s
•Between then and 1970’s aura and chakras reinterpreted by others speculating
about nature of soul based on mystical insight - American clairvoyant Edgar Cayce
•New Age language embedded in todays language – Comp Therapy – See my Aura?
•# different healing modalities, lines of thought, health, well-being and spiritual
concepts that include aura over the last 50 years = no surprise that research into
the subject from all of those different areas, groups, beliefs and standpoints has
given rise to a whole range of theoretical models of the energy body which may
subtly differ from each other. This is evident in such details as:
• whether the aura has layers or not and if so
• the number, quality and essence of each layer
•most commonly accepted model + what resonates with me, my life & experience
The Aura – Human Energy Field – page 28
•The Human Energy Field or aura or often called the astral body
•Manifestation of universal energy centred on/intimately involved with human life.
•Described as a luminous body that surrounds and interpenetrates physical body
•Although it is a single unified electromagnetic field, our perception is that it is
divisible into layers (sometimes called bodies) that interpenetrate and surround
each other in successive layers with each succeeding body having higher vibrations
than the body that it surrounds and interpenetrates.
•Each layer or body can be further defined by location, colour, brightness, form,
density, fluidity and function and all together contributes to the aura emitting its
own characteristic frequency of radiation (remember our dominant frequencies!).
•Each layer is associated with a chakra - 1st layer associated with 1st chakra
The Aura – Human Energy Field – page 28
•The first layer and chakra - with automatic and autonomic functioning of the body.
•The second layer and second chakra - the emotional aspect of human beings.
•The third layer and third chakra - our mental life, with linear thinking.
•The fourth level and heart chakra, is the vehicle through which we love, not only
our mates, but also humanity in general.
•The fifth level associated with a higher will more connected with the divine will.
• The fifth chakra is associated with the power of the word, speaking things into being, listening
and taking responsibility for our actions.
•The sixth level and sixth chakra - celestial love that extends beyond the human
range of love and encompasses all life.
•The seventh layer and seventh chakra - the higher mind, knowing and integration
of our spiritual and physical makeup.
The Aura – The Etheric Body – page 29
•Named after the word ether - the state between energy and matter, the etheric
body is considered as lower astral

•Some people see a bluish or greyish colour or a light blue on dark blue grid,
composed of tiny energy lines like a sparkling web of light beams

•Has the same structure as the physical body with anatomical parts and organs.

•Connected to the root chakra, extends an inch or two out from the body
•Most associated with the physical body and as such may be the easiest to see.

•Associated with survival issues, functions of the physical body (including

automatic) and the physical sensations of pain and pleasure.
The Aura – The Emotional Body – page 29
•Associated with feelings and the emotional aspects of our lives and being

•Roughly follows the outline of the physical body.

•Connected to the sacral chakra, much more fluid structure than the etheric
• does not duplicate the physical body the way the etheric does.

•Consist of soft multi coloured clouds of light visible from one to six inches out
from the body

•This layer will show dark spots, cloudy and stagnant areas where emotional
blocks and pain exist.
The Aura – The Mental Body – page 29
•Composed of still finer substances - associated with thoughts/mental
processes, linear thinking and personal power.
•The mental body is connected to the solar plexus chakra
•It expands and becomes brighter when its owner is concentrating on mental
processes.
•It extends from three to eight inches from the body
•Is a structured body containing the structure of our ideas and thought forms
appearing to be blobs of varying brightness and form.
•These thought forms have additional colours superimposed on them
emanating from emotional level - represents emotion connected to the thought.
The Aura – The Crucible – page 29
•These three bodies are the lower astral and together make up the personality
•Begin to be created at conception and dissolve at death.
•Lower three metabolise energies related to the physical world
•Upper three metabolise energies related to the spiritual world.
•In the middle lies the fourth layer or astral level, associated with heart chakra
•the transforming crucible through which
• Spiritual energy must pass through the fire of the heart to be transformed into the lower
physical energies
• Physical energies of the lower three auric layers must pass through the transformative fire
of the heart to become spiritual energies.
•Upper three chakras are the physical, emotional and mental functioning of the
human being in their spiritual reality
• where there is the higher will
• the higher feelings of love
• higher knowing, where whole concepts are understood at once.
The Aura – The Astral Body – page 30
•The astral body is connected with the heart chakra
•Perceived to be amorphous (without a clearly defined shape or form)
•Composed of multi coloured clouds infused with the rose light of love
•Extends out about 0.5 to 1 foot from the body.

•Associated with the heart and love (both specific and universal),

•This layer connects the lower three levels with the higher three

•It is considered that virtually all healing energy comes through this, the first of
the spiritual layers.
The Aura – The Etheric Template – page
30
•The etheric template layer is associated with the throat chakra and as such with
speech and communication, listening and taking responsibility for ones’ own
actions.
•Called the etheric template because it contains all the forms that exist on the
physical plane in a blueprint or template form and is associated with the higher
aspects of will and is more connected with the divine will.
•It is very rare for people to be really aware of this layer but has been perceived
by some as a blue grid light ball like a blueprint around the body
•Extending about 1.5 to 2.5 feet out from the body
•When balanced and active it can promote feelings of bliss and a feeling of being
moved by the divine.
•It is the level at which sound creates matter and where sounding in healing is
the most effective
The Aura – The Celestial Body – page 30
•The emotional level of the spiritual plane, connected with the third eye chakra
•composed of pastel colours with beautiful gold-silver shimmering, opalescent
threads of light
•Extending about 2 - 2.75 feet from the body.
•Level through which we raise our consciousness to experience spiritual ecstasy
(through meditation or other transformation work) by reaching the point of
“being” where:
• we have a nurturing awareness of oneself as connected with all the universe,
• when we see the light and love in everything in existence,
• when we are immersed in the light and feel we are of it and it is of us
• feel that we are one or in union with God or all that is.
The Aura – The Ketheric Template – page
31
•The ketheric template layer is the mental level of the spiritual plane
•Composed of thousands of threads of pulsating, shimmering gold-silver light of
very strong durability that hold the whole form of the aura together including a
golden grid structure of the physical body and all the chakras
•Extending from about 2.5 to 3.5 feet from the body.
•It can also be perceived as having an outer edge, 0.25 – 0.5 inches thick
resembling a very strong, protective and resilient eggshell, resistant to
penetration.
•Connected to the crown chakra, it is associated with the
• higher mind,
• connection with the divine
• spiritual information
• integration of the spiritual and physical aspects of being.
Energy Imprints and the Nature of Disease – page

The Chakras – page 33
•Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel or vortex - refers to the perceived
shape of the energy vortices that are found in the HEF.
•A chakra occurs where two energy channels intersect
• so there are known to be over 80,000 chakras.
• Energy channels are sometimes referred to as Meridians (of which there are 14 major
meridians) and also Nadis.
•In some theoretical models there can be twelve major chakras however the
most common models in the west concentrate on the seven main chakras
•The two minor chakras located in the palms are of course very important in
healing
• transmit healing energy and receive energetic information from the universe.
• channel healing energies to yourself and others
• receive impressions of the energy of a room, person, chakra, situation, etc
The Chakras – page 34
•The seven major chakras are found in a vertical line
down the front and back of the central channel in the
energy field.
•In the same way that the central nervous system of
our physical body consists of the spinal cord leading
to the brain, the energetic equivalent is the central
channel
•Each major chakra on the front of the body is paired
with its counterpart on the back of the body, and
together are considered to be the front and rear
aspect of one chakra.
•The points or tips of the chakras, where they connect
to the central channel, are called the roots or the
hearts of the chakras.
The Chakras – page 35
•Whereas the function of the spinal cord is to relay impulses to and from the
brain and other parts of the body, the central channel, channels energy from the
UEF to and from the Crown and root chakras and so most of the reiki energy
flows through the central channel.

•Energy from the UEF is drawn into the body through each spinning chakra
•each swirling vortex of energy can be perceived to function like whirlpools,
cyclones, tornadoes and hurricanes.

•So, the chakras, then, have three major functions:

• To vitalize each auric body and in turn the physical body
• To bring about the development of different aspects of self-consciousness. Each chakra is
related to a specific psychological function
• To transmit energy between the auric levels
Chakra # 1 - The Root Chakra – page 36
•Colour: Red
•Location: This chakra is located at the very base of your spine, near your tailbone,
between the anus and the genitals. Up to just below your belly button.
•Function: Determines physical energy/health in relation to survival issues and
grounding in reality.
• The role of the root chakra is to connect all of your energy with the Earth, which is called grounding.
• When you think of your Root Chakra, think of your day to day survival here on earth.
• This energy centre’s role is to give you everything you need to survive, which these days, typically
translates to financial and emotional security.
•Governs: Spinal column and kidneys, hips, legs, feet, lower back and sexual organs
•Endocrine: Adrenals

• engaging in self-destructive behaviours
Chakra # 2 - The Sacral Chakra – page 37
•Colour: Orange
•Location: The sacral chakra is located right below the belly button and extends to
its centre.
•Function: As the centre of sexual activity and associated with gut feelings, fear
and strong emotions, this chakra is all about your identity as a human
and what you do with it.
• This chakra brings you creative energy to enjoy life.
• Home of the creative life force energy that helps you enjoy your life here on Earth.
• It’s the energy that motivates you to enjoy the fruits of your labour including indulging in pleasurable
activities like sex.
•Governs: Reproductive system, kidneys, bladder, and large intestine.
•Endocrine: Ovaries/Testes

on oneself, feeling guilty for no reason and experiencing frigidity or
impotence
Chakra # 3 - The Solar Plexus Chakra –
page 38
•Colour: Yellow
•Location: The solar plexus starts in the centre of the belly button and extends up
to the base of the sternum/diaphragm - where your two sets of ribs
connect in the centre of your chest.
•Function: This is the centre of your personal power, ambition, growth, intellect,
reason and will and is where your self-confidence, identity and
personal power are born.
• Have you ever been in a situation that you just knew wasn’t right for you?
• Perhaps you’ve been in a situation that you knew was going to work out.
• Where did you feel those cues in your body?
• Most people say they feel those types of cues in their “gut.” In reality, your solar plexus is the seat of
your personal power, and you can physically feel that confidence and wisdom in its location.
•Governs: Stomach, liver, gall-bladder, nervous system. pancreas, small intestine.
•Endocrine: Solar plexus

down to your mouth and up to the top of your head.
•Function: Influences your imagination, intuition and psychic abilities.
• The Third Eye chakra opens up your mind to information beyond the material world and the 5
senses.
• Extra sensory perception, intuition or psychic energy, all comes from the third eye.
• There is actually a small pinecone shaped gland in your brain that takes in light. This gland is
responsible for helping you feel awake in the daytime and sleepy at night. Long before brain imaging,
ancient cultures knew this Third Eye existed, and they also realized that it receives information from
sources outside of the five senses.
•Governs: Lower brain, left eye, ears, nose, nervous system
•Endocrine: Pituitary gland - This includes the hormone which produces
contractions during labour-and releases milk from the breasts during
lactation.

expanded consciousness, Divine communication and inter-
connectedness with all things and all knowledge.
• The Crown chakra is pure consciousness energy.
• Consciousness energy is everywhere and in everything. It connects us to the entire universe.
• Our own personal consciousness is located in the 7th chakra, but it’s really more like the seed of a
universal energy than something personal or individual.
•Governs: Upper brain, right eye
•Endocrine: Pineal Gland
•Blocked: being constantly exhausted, an inability to make decisions, alienation,
poor sleep or depression
The Meridians – page 45
•The meridian system is a concept in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) about a path
through which the life-energy flows.
•This meridian concept has typical characteristics of ancient Chinese philosophy
•Like Reiki and the concept of chakras, over time TCM gained influence in the West and
takes pride and place in many health modalities and philosophical theories.
•All familiar with acupuncture/acupressure - is underpinned by the meridian concept
•The fact that the whole body is systemically treated in a reiki treatment coupled with
reikis’ innate intelligence means that any blocks or issues in the meridian system are
covered by the mere practice of laying on of hands
•You can treat the meridians via hand positions intended specifically for that or you can
apply reiki via tracing, which is simply moving your open hand (quickly and fairly
generally), either a few inches above or directly on your body, along the course of
each of the 14 meridians
•Each meridian is most active at certain times of the day/night - focus on a specific
meridian given the time of the day you are treating at
The Meridians: Yin/Yang Energy Flow -
page 45
•In oriental medical philosophy we learn that there is energy that is
• magnetic, consisting of a north pole and a south pole,
• expressed in the body as positive and negative polarities.
•The positive power is called Yang, or male, and the negative is called Yin, or female.
•The Yin energy flows, up from the feet toward the head
•The Yang down from the head toward the feet.
•Meridians are the pathways of the positive and negative energy that carry on some of
the communications between the parts of the human being.
•These meridians have been measured and mapped by modern technological methods -
electronically, thermally, and radioactively, showing that new tubular structures exist
• inside and outside of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels
• on the surface of internal organs
• under the dermis
•The current Korean researchers now believe the primo-vascular system is
• in fact the physical component of the Acupuncture Meridian System
• involved in channelling energy flow of energy and information relayed by biophotons and DNA.

The Meridians System - page 46
•500 Specific acupuncture points exist along the meridians.
•These points are electro-magnetic in character
• located by hand, with micro-electrical voltage meters and with muscle testing.
•The meridian system is comprised of
•Ten organ meridians, named for the associated life function and name of an organ.
•Two function meridians - both of which are generalized functions of the body
• The Circulation-Sex meridian is related to the overall circulation of all bodily fluids.
• The Triple Warmer meridian is related to temperature regulation, immune response, metabolism,
passions and survival responses.
•Two midline meridians - like storage batteries and deal with energy in & out the body
• The Central meridian flows from the pubic bone up the centre of the body to the lower lip.
• Governing flows from the tailbone up the spine, over the top of the head to the upper lip.
•Meridian Cycle is a continuous, unbroken pathway where energy flows in one definite
direction, from one meridian to another, in a well- determined order
•Throughout the course of the day and night, each meridian reaches a peak of energy,
one after another, in this same order, best represented as a wheel, or a 24-hour clock

The Endocrine system - page 51
•The endocrine system is a collection of ductless glands (secrete directly into the blood
rather than through a duct) that are not connected anatomically that secrete
hormones.
•Hormones are substances that travel through the body to distant places, where they tell
cells what to do and they control a number of processes including: growth,
metabolism, sexual function and stress response.
•The major glands of the endocrine system include the pineal gland, pituitary gland,
pancreas, ovaries, testes, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, hypothalamus and adrenal
glands.
•There are a bunch of other organs that are not primarily endocrine organs – the gut, for
example – that secrete hormones too.
•The chakras energetically stimulate the endocrine system, but the mind also
influences this system through our various attitudes.
•Balanced attitudes contribute to a balanced secretion of hormones from the
endocrine glands.
The Endocrine system - page 51
•Each endocrine gland secretes its own hormone into the bloodstream.
•The main controlling hub of the system is the pituitary gland, a pea-sized gland at the
base of the brain that secretes a bunch of hormones.

•A few of these hormones travel to distant tissues to give instructions

• (prolactin, for example, travels to the breast and stimulates milk production).
•Most pituitary hormones, however, travel to endocrine end-organs and tell them to
secrete their own hormones
• E.g., thyroid stimulating hormone travels to the thyroid gland and tells it to secrete thyroid hormone.

•The pituitary, in turn, is controlled by the hypothalamus, which has its own set of
hormones which tell the pituitary what to do

•It’s basically a three-tier system:

• the hypothalamus tells the pituitary what to do, which tells the other endocrine organs what to do.
• The end organ hormones feed back to the hypothalamus, telling it when to turn on or off.
The Endocrine system: Pineal - page 52
•Pineal gland - pea-sized endocrine gland deep in the brain of animals with backbones.

•The pineal gland produces melatonin, a serotonin- derived hormone which modulates
sleep patterns in both circadian (24 hour cycle of daytime and night-time) and seasonal
cycles.

•The shape and size of the gland make it resemble a pine nut, inferring its name.

•The pineal glands’ production of melatonin affects the other glands in the endocrine
system

•Mirrors the Crown Chakra’s relationship with the other Chakra’s.

• This gland and Chakra hold sway over the entire system.
The Endocrine system: Pituitary - page 52
•Once called the master gland is the controlling hub of the endocrine system
•Controlled by the hypothalamus, which releases stimulating and inhibitory hormones
that tell the pituitary what to do
•Located within a structure close to the eyebrows and Has Two lobes:
• Anterior lobe is a glandular organ that makes the hormones that:
• Tells the thyroid to release its hormones - Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
• Tells the adrenals to release their hormones- Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
• Regulates the menstrual cycle - Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
• Regulates the menstrual cycle - Luteinizing hormone (LH)
• Tells cells to grow, helps regulate blood sugar - Growth hormone (GH)
• Stimulates the mammary glands to produce milk - Prolactin (PL)
• Posterior lobe is a neural organ (not glandular) that stores and releases a couple hormones that the
hypothalamus makes:
• Oxytocin: helps initiate labour, is involved in trust, monogamy, and performance on exams
• Vasopressin: helps regulate blood pressure
•The spiritual energies of the Third Eye Chakra are reflected in the pituitary’s influence
on the whole body
•Third Eye-pituitary connected with birth and motherhood, a time when many women
feel that their intuition, particularly with regard to their child, is at its’ peak
The Endocrine system: Thyroid - page 53
•Thyroid gland is situated at either side of the larynx and trachea in the neck
•Makes thyroid hormone which is the main controller of the body’s metabolism –
• how it converts food into energy.
• It acts all over the body to stimulate things: it makes
• the skin sweat, the heart pump faster, and the gut move food through faster.

•Parathyroid glands - Situated at the back (anterior) make parathyroid hormone (PTH):
• controls the level of calcium in the bloodstream
• acts all over the place (bone, kidney, gut).

•In addition to physical growth these glands are also thought to affect ones’ mental
development.
•The Throat Chakra, linked to all forms of communication, corresponds to the need for
• balance between the rational, cerebral and the emotional expression of the heart.
The Endocrine system: Thymus - page 53
•The thymus is a lymphoid gland comprised of two identically sized lobes, located
behind the sternum (breastbone) but in front of the heart.

•It produces growth hormone that stimulate general growth especially early in life.
• At puberty, the thymus reaches the height of its use, becoming its largest.
• After this age, the size of the thymus declines.

•Largest during childhood and shrinks after puberty, but its effect on your body’s
defences last your whole life

•It has a purifying role in the body by stimulating the production of lymphocytes, which
• forms a vital part of the body’s immune response
• forms part of the bloods’ white cells defence system, attacking invading organisms and providing
immunity.

•This Purifying Quality relates the thymus to the healing properties of the Heart
Chakra.
The Endocrine system: Pancreas - page 54
•The pancreas lies behind the stomach and secretes a variety of substances essential
for the effective digestion of food.

•It has an
• exocrine part (which secretes enzymes that help break down food) and an
• endocrine part (which secretes hormones, like insulin).

•Insulin is a hormone that helps get sugar into most cells of the body.

•Insulin controlled by blood sugar; when blood sugar goes up, insulin goes up.

•When the Solar Plexus Chakra is over stimulated it can cause problems with excess
blood sugar, the major cause of diabetes.

•An under stimulated Solar Plexus Chakra can lead to ulcers.

The Endocrine system: Ovaries & Testis -
pg 54
•The almond shaped ovaries lie on either side of the uterus, directly below the opening
of the fallopian tubes.

•Ovaries - store egg cells and produce oestrogen and progesterone

•Testes - generate sperm as well as testosterone

•The male and female reproductive organs, or gonads:

• Produce hormones responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics such as the
depth of voice and amount of body hair.
• Control an individuals’ sexual development and maturity as well as the production of sperm & eggs.

•The potential for life in ovaries is mirrored in the drives of the Sacral Chakra through
•our relationship with our own sexuality and
•issues of emotional balance in relation to that.
The Endocrine system: Adrenal Glands -
pg 55
•The adrenals are triangular shaped glands that cap each of the kidneys.

•They secrete a variety of hormones including those that

• regulate the bodys’ metabolism of fats, proteins and carbohydrates
• control the balance of salt in our bodily fluids
• And of course – Adrenalin

•The adrenals have a cortex (with three layers) and a medulla. The cortex secretes:
• Mineralocorticoids: help regulate blood pressure
• Glucocorticoids: help regulate blood sugar and a ton of other things, like immune function
• Sex steroids: help regulate reproductive functions, and are important during sexual development

•Last but not least Produces/releases adrenalin, epinephrine and norepinephrine

involved in primitive fight, flight or freeze response.

• This ties directly to the Root Chakra’s association with the drive for survival.

•Courage and Strength

• To face challenges that we know need facing - expect tough times ahead
• Be empowered to be able to use reiki as a supportive platform

•Heightening intuition
•Creativity and problem solving as it can open us to the realm of intuition and guidance.
•Enables development of intuition to a level that’s akin to having psychic abilities

•Understanding the Universe

• revised understanding of the nature of energy, our energy bodies, how we attract experiences
• our connection to everything that is
Ways of Using Reiki - page 59
•Helping Others
• Heightened sense of empathy and a strong drive to help
• Reiki turns empathy into practice
• In-person or distant

•Lifestyle change
• Use reiki to bolster your determination and help you to stay focussed on changes

•Curbing fears
• challenge the limiting thinking patterns that underpin thoughts and emotions that keep us stuck.
• Shine the light of reiki on thoughts such as
• “I won’t be able to do it”, “nobody cares anyway”, “I don’t want to let anyone down” and “sure what’s the point anyway”.

•Healing illnesses
•Sleep & Reducing Stress
•Clearing Crystals and Charging Toys
Possible effects during and after Reiki-
page 60
•During a Reiki treatment, both the Reiki practitioner and the recipient receive a
treatment of reiki and both may feel reiki sensations.

•Feeling deep relaxation promoting a calm, peaceful sense of well- being on all levels
•Feel somatic sensations during the treatment such as heat and cold, tingling
•Might see colours
•Some have an emotional response such as crying, laughing and everything in between
•Some people can yawn a few times and fall asleep.

•I see all of these indications that energy shifts are taking place, allowing harmony to be
restored.
•Your perception of these can differ from the recipient as each is an interpretation of the
moving energy, filtered through each of your perceptions.
The Recipient experience - page 60
•Set New Client up with understanding of the range of possible reiki sensations.
•Set the time and space as a place of honesty, trust and privacy, a place where they can
truly be themselves, take off the mask, emote, sleep or scream.
•You will not be able to pre-empt exactly what is going to happen
•Ensure that you are prepared to support them throughout.
•If you do have a recipient going through a strong outward expression of emotion during
the treatment
• let it happen and wait for the right time to tell them that it’s totally ok
• ask them if they are ok to continue?.
• They may settle a bit and then it may kick off again, just stick with it,
• it’s obviously what needs to happen - witness, honour, support and be a part of it.

•“Healing Without Feeling”

•The energy is bringing up things for healing that the client is not ready to re-experience
on a conscious level, even in the safety of the treatment room.
The Practitioner experience - page 60
•During a Reiki session you may experience:
• any of the sensations discussed already
• pins-and-needles, tingling, vibrational buzzing
• feeling of static electrical sparks, numbness, throbbing, itchiness, sleepiness
• pure joy and happiness and thankfulness.
• Visual imagery, inner voices
• kinaesthesia (sense of body movement)
•Or, you may not feel anything, even though your client may say otherwise.

•“Reiki Sensations” can be very subtle and may be easily overlooked, but with
continued practice most people will begin to notice even the slightest shifts of energy
•Not experiencing these through 5 senses, doesn’t mean it’s not strong and effective

•Remember to ask that your ego be put aside and detach yourself from all and any
outcomes.
•Trust it and let everything else go…. simple as that!
The Practitioner experience - page 61
•Opposing sensations
•Warmth on one palm and a coolness on the other palm
•Indicates reiki is working away at clearing an imbalance, blockage, etc.
•Especially apparent where the hand position covers two aspects/sides of the body
•left and right side of the body and brain associated with different aspects of person
•masculine (right side of the body and left brain)
•feminine (left side of the body and right brain).
•Hold the position until they level out and feel the same.

•Hot and Cold Hands

•Hot Hands after attunement?
•Cold Hands? – Rub together to warm them up
The Practitioner experience - page 61
•Temperature Variations During a Reiki Treatment
•Hand temperature may change as they are giving Reiki (burning hot to icy cold).
•Practitioner’s and recipient’s perception of the temperature can be different.
• You’re burning up, but recipient may feel coolness from your touch.
• You are experiencing cold hands, while recipient may feel warmth of your hands.

•Extra Healing Hands

•Recipient may have a high sense of proprioception (sense of body position)
•Kinaesthesia (sense of body movement)
•Awareness of certain parts of the body is particularly strong as energy flushes through
the body and concentrates on a needy place.

•Healing spirit guides of some sort are present.

• Don’t underestimate the power of the affirmation you make at the start of the treatment.
The Practitioner experience - page 62
•The Reiki Pulse
•The pulsating sensation of Reiki can be felt in all parts of your body, but especially in
the palms of your hands.
•Secondary chakras in the palms are the outlets of Reiki energy.
•Reiki wants to flow out of your hands and be put to good use.
•As soon as you place hands on yourself or someone else, reiki automatically turns on.
•After you are attuned to Reiki, you can become a walking generator of sorts.

•Your body or hands may heat up and start channelling reiki whenever you are near
anyone who is receptive to Reiki.

•You might also find that people start to tell you things, normally beyond your previous
relationship or this can even happen with strangers.
• If you are comfortable with doing so, try not to push it, stop it or drag it out, let it take its course
• Active listening is probably exactly what the person needed for whatever reason.
From Attunement to Treatment

Page 63 - 73
First Degree Reiki Attunement - page 63
•Structured process - Reiki teacher passes on the ability to channel the Reiki energy.
•The process involves:
• the energetic stimulation of the channels responsible for channelling energy
• clearing any blocks to Reiki in your aura and connecting you to the ability to run Reiki energy by
means of a direct transmission to your energy body (aura).
•Focus is to ensure that the universal energy flows through the individual freely.
•This process is simple, non-invasive & not a ritual or tied into any religious philosophy.
•The process has been handed down from Dr. Usui and was the method he used in Reiki
classes to enhance the flow of energy through participants

•Reiki is most often taught in three levels:

• Level one people learn basic techniques for hands on treatment for self and others.
• Level two one learns techniques for remote healing and receives attunement for using symbols to
activate specific functions for mental and emotional healing and increasing Reiki connection/effect
• Level three adds a spiritual or intuitive healing energy function and the ability to attune others to use
Reiki themselves.
First Degree Reiki Attunement - page 63
•Children channel the energy freely, because we stimulated the (Upper) parts of energy
field responsible for channelling energy by:
• Being able to express our truth,
• Living more in the present moment
• Being more unconditionally loving

•From puberty onwards, we stimulate activity in the lower part of the energy channel
and the lower three endocrine glands, as our focus shifts to:
• basic survival,
• Sexuality & relationships
• Victimization & control

•Attunement helps re-establish connection to the ocean of energy surrounding us all

• Energy begins to flow again through the upper part of the energy channels.
• Upper four chakras in particular are energetically stimulated
• Lower three will integrate into any changes which occur in the overall chakra system.
Cleansing and the healing process- page 64
•Following a Reiki 1 and the attunement process great changes can occur in your life:
• Energy helps remove tension and toxins from the body.
• Energy helps restore balance and healing to old injury and to current challenges.
• Energy can bring aspects, not serving you anymore, up to the surface for release.

•In the process of change and healing you may notice a PEMS cleansing occurring.
• Headaches, coughing, runny noses,
• a slight flare up of an existing condition
• being tired for a few days
• mild irritation and emotion (moving out of old habits and emotional responses)

•See the Big Picture - Would you prefer to free yourself of them or bury them again?
•Some people can notice improvements in their
• physical health, confidence levels, self- empowered, emotional makeup and thought patterns

•Some people in the Reiki community refer to a 21 day cleansing period.

• This revolves around a theory that it takes three days for each chakra to settle into a new vibration.

•The following are some suggestions as to how you might like to prepare yourself and
raise energy for a healing session, and how you might enjoy drawing it to a close.

•Choose whatever appeals to you and leave the rest.

•A ritual that feels intuitively right for you is important for putting yourself into a frame
of mind where you are relaxed, focussed, receptive and aware.

•To use reiki, just intending it to work now and letting it flow is enough

•Practice and having a structure of how to start and finish helps with keeping the ego
and conscious mind from getting involved unnecessarily.

•Note: Practitioners reserve the right, at their discretion, to refuse Reiki to members of
the general public for reasons of personal safety, including the abuse of alcohol and
mind-altering substances
Start, Middle and End of a treatment-
•Drugs are bad…..don’t do drugs!
page 66
• Reiki federation of Ireland guidelines state that the use of alcohol and/or mind-altering substances is
strictly forbidden when practising or teaching Reiki.
• Some people say not to even give treatment after a heavy meal will affect your ability to channel the energy effectively.

•Prepping the space for treatment

• Prepare the room by turning down lighting, switching off the phone, lighting a candle, putting on
soft, relaxing music and making sure you will not be disturbed.
• For self-healing, you may find that sitting up with your back and arms well supported allows you to
focus better without falling asleep!

•Bring your own gifts and be yourself

• Some people can be clairvoyant (seeing), clairaudial (hearing) and/or clairsentient (feeling) and may
sense something useful for the client.
• If talking and communication is your gift then say that upfront and set the tone so that if you intuit the
need to communicate something during the treatment, you can do so and it won’t be a surprise
• do it gently though so as to not disturb them completely
Start, Middle and End of a treatment-
page 66
•The clients’ responsibility during the treatment and the question of diagnosis
• Give client the freedom to control the healing by telling you if they are feeling uncomfortable, need a
break or have had enough.
• Explain exactly what you are going to do during the session and ask them whether they would prefer
a hands-on or hands-off treatment.
• Ask them if they have specific issues they would like to address during the session, or any specific
areas they would like you to treat
• This helps them to become aware of what they need and open up to the energy.
• Tell them that you are simply a channel and that they are free to take whatever energy they need
from the treatment and to stop you or ask you to move on at any point.
• Invite them to fully participate in the healing by taking responsibility for their health and well- being
and for the outcome they desire and reassure them that Reiki works regardless awareness or belief.
• They are responsible for healing themselves
• You have no control over whether they get better or not and it is important to make sure they
understand this.
• DO NOT offer them any diagnosis of what, if anything, could be wrong with them, unless you feel
strongly intuitively guided to do so, and if so, then please proceed with extreme care.
• If they ask, state that your reiki training does not qualify you to diagnose.
• Instead, tell them what you have experienced during the session and ask them to tune into their own intuitive understanding
of what it might mean
Start, Middle and End of a treatment-

Start, Middle and End of a treatment-
•Set an intention
page 67
• Although not exactly part of reiki basic level training that I received or can research I do think that
setting an intention for the treatment is very powerful.
• Intention – we acknowledge that we are setting our energy to a state where our thoughts, words and
actions will now begin to shift and follow through to the fulfilment of that intention, even if we don’t
know how that will happen.

•Gassho to calm and centre yourself

• The attunement you receive will also open the palm chakras for channelling the energy.
• Give each palm chakra a few pumps with the intention to start the reiki flow
• Sit comfortably, close your eyes and open out your palms in a state of readiness and intend your
hands be receptive and open.
• Then place your hands in "Gassho" form in front of your heart chakra, focusing your whole attention
on the point where the two middle fingers meet, and breathe deeply and evenly for a moment or so
to calm and centre yourself.
• Be comfortable, if you’re not relaxed more of the energy will go to helping you relax, than to the client
Start, Middle and End of a treatment-
•Affirmation
page 68
• Prepare yourself beforehand and include an intention or affirmation stating that:
• your ego be moved aside so that only the pure energy of reiki will flow through you
• your reiki be powerful and effective and that your client will be deeply healed
• give thanks for benefit your client will be receiving.
• Use whatever words you are comfortable with for the intention/affirmation

•Centre yourself – the crown chakra

• Centre yourself by breathing in and out slowly and deeply.
• Visualise your crown chakra opening and divine energy pouring in like a stream of brilliant white light,
filling you with joy, peace and thankfulness and enveloping you and the person with its qualities of
love, grace and healing.

•Honour the perfect person

• Silently honour the person by affirming that they are perfect just as they are and inviting them to take
whatever Reiki energy they need for health of body, mind and spirit.
• This also helps you to set aside all judgement about them, honour their free will and allow them to
control the healing.
Start, Middle and End of a treatment-

•Reiji-Ho for guidance and Byosen for scanning
68
• After affirmation, raise your folded hands to your third eye (forehead) in "Reiji-Ho", which is a mudra
or hand position asking for assistance and spiritual guidance for the treatment.
• Wait for guidance on what is needed, using all of your senses and knowledge of the body to observe
and tune into your client.
• This teaches you to listen to your intuition and develop an inner awareness of what the client needs.

• After years of training - or if you are already very skilled at listening to your intuition -you may be able
to "see" ailments in your clients just by looking at them.
• If you don't get a clear message with the Reiji-ho right away, hold one or both of your hands over the
client's crown chakra and tune into their energy body.
• If you still can't tell, either proceed with a whole-body treatment or use Byosen scanning method.

• Byosen Scanning is scanning the client's aura from head to toe about 2"- 4" above the body, searching
for a sensation of energy in your hands (tingling, heat and cold, pulling, tugging, flow, etc), a noticeable
increased warmth or coldness in a particular area, a magnetic feeling, or a simple knowing.

• Wherever you experience a difference in sensation in the client's aura is an indication that the area
Start, Middle and End of a treatment-
•Ready to begin?
page 68
• You are now ready to begin the treatment. Consciously and intently connect with their aura.

•Be aware of your movements

• Be very aware of how your movements affect the person you are treating
• Keep them light, smooth and fluid, avoiding anything that might jar their nervous system or make
them anxious in any way.
• Avoid
• breathing down onto their face,
• applying too much pressure with your hands
• touching their throat or genitals, both very sensitive areas.

•Looking after yourself during a treatment

• If your body is uncomfortable in any way, you will be tense and the energy will not flow as strongly
• When standing, keep your knees very slightly bent and your bottom tucked in to avoid back strain
• If you are doing a lot of treatments and prefer sitting, an office chair on wheels with adjustable seat
height is ideal.
• Also use the plinth in terms of leaning on it where you can/need to.
Start, Middle and End of a treatment-
page
•Finishing treatment – Double Chakra Time
69
• A lovely way to finish the healing is to balance the chakras, two at a time,
• Alternatively, you can end by going back to the crown in an act of blessing or to their feet,

•Final smooth down and zip-ups

• With the visualisation that my hand chakras are like hoovers, I then find it effective to smooth down
the persons’ aura and zip them up.
• I do this, three times by running both hands (one for each side) along them from head to foot, a
couple of inches above their body, making sure that I cover as much of them as I can reach.
• Once I get past the feet I brush my hands off away from the treatment area and
• following the central meridian I zip them up (from below their feet) by tracing up their body to their
bottom lip.

•Grounding the client

• Do the grounding visualisation for 2 minutes
• Walk purposefully around the room, pressing their heals firmly down on the floor
• Walking around taking deep breaths and stretching is also helpful, as is some fresh air.
• Have them sit quietly until they feel steady and fully focussed again.
Start, Middle and End of a treatment-
•Advice for the Coming Days
page 70
• Drink six to eight glasses of water a day over the next three days to assist in any clearing out that the
Reiki energy may stimulate.
• Not uncommon to experience some mild symptoms of detoxification, in the form of:
• loose motions, headaches, rashes, tiredness, vivid dreams,
• irritability, tearfulness or other similarly mild to moderate emotional or physical reactions.

• Usually they will feel wonderfully relaxed, euphoric even, as though walking on air.

• No two treatments are ever exactly alike, as it all depends on the persons’ state and their particular
needs at the time.

• Distressing reaction to the treatment: ASSURANCE

• Assure them that this is just energy shifting that needs to shift,
• Assure them Now is just the right time for it to happen - their subconscious mind knows what is best
• Let them talk it through until they feel calm and reassured.
• A follow-up Reiki treatment in the next day or two will help to restore their equilibrium if that’s an option for you both.
Importance of breathing correctly – page
70
•Most people are shallow breathers who do not breathe correctly through bad habits
induced by persistent and prolonged stress.
• "upper chest" breathers, who tend to draw shallow breaths into their upper chest.
• “stomach” breathers, who take shallow breaths in the area of the stomach.
•Combination of correct breathing and relaxation is the antidote for stress.
•Correct breathing is slow, deep, gentle breathing, not big breaths.
•There is an esoteric aspect of breath.
• The breath is the bridge between the body and consciousness
• Every esoteric tradition throughout history has recognised the special meaning of the breath as a
means of controlling the physical and of linking with the spiritual.
•Breathing is the means by which the universal energy links body and soul
• this linking may be used to affect and expand or raise consciousness

•Develop your awareness of how you breathe normally and in times you are meditating
or practicing reiki.
Importance visualisation & meditation –
•“Winning” where Henry Shefflin
pg 71
• visualisation caused all of the same neurological triggering of the brain and in turn its physiological
messaging to the rest of the body as actually doing something.
• So, visualising something and experiencing something are almost the same (physiologically anyway).
• The power of visualisation and the power of our thoughts.
•We use visualisation in meditation & treatment in terms of our perception and intuition
but also in grounding techniques
•Used by practitioner and the patient to relax the mind and the body
•Thought is very creative and is the energy that sets everything into motion
•The subconscious mind responds to thoughts, negative or positive.
•Visualisation is powerful enough in itself to
• assist people back to good health
• helps them get in touch with their own inner power

•Visualising nature and colour in nature automatically helps to regenerate the heart.
•Tension and fear will be replaced by peace and calm.
Connecting with spiritual energy – pg 72
•A practitioner should respect the source of healing energy, which should be received
into the clearest possible channel.
•It is important that the practitioner is relaxed and open, in order to raise his/her
consciousness and connect with the source & essence of reiki at highest level possible
•Thoughts should be focused on love, peace and light.
•The reiki energy can be visualised coming through from the higher self with beautiful
colours such as violet, rose pink and brilliant white.
•Golden light will assist in raising the vibration of your thoughts.
•The practitioner releases this energy from the whole being, through the heart and
hands to the client.

•When the session is over, the practitioner separates mentally and physically

•Both should be firmly grounded and returned to a level suitable for everyday living
Using Reiki self-healing every day – pg 72
•One of the fundamentals of Reiki is to connect with one’s self spiritually, or soul.
•Usui taught his students a specific meditation technique called Hatsurei Ho:
• Hatsu meaning to bring forth,
• Rei meaning spirit
• Ho meaning method.

•Self-healing plays an important part in the Reiki practice for obvious reasons including
• Align yourself with the essence of reiki,
• Refine one’s ability to channel reiki
• Work on your own health and well-being in forms of treatment and maintenance.

•I suggest you do it at some level Every day:

• Full self-treatment which can take up to 30 minutes
• 5 minute burst with your hands in the universal position

75
•Place hands on the knee and feet working on one side first and then the next.
•There are chakras in both these areas and the Reiki energy can release energy
blockages there to increase the flow of energy.
•This helps people to be more flexible and to take action when needed.

•It’s good to ensure to run Reiki into the joints, shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, hips,
and the hands.
•This releases tension and stress that is held in the joints.

•Each area of the body has a symbolic meaning in its healing,

• releasing tension in the ankles assists in reaching higher goals,
• releasing tension in the knees assists in the release of emotion and ability to forgive.
• When the shoulders are free of tension and stress there may be increased determination.
Hand positions for chair treatment – pg 76
•1 Crown: Gently place your hands on the Crown of the client's head.
Avoid touching the area directly if someone is undergoing chemotherapy,
has open sores, is balding or has just got their hair done and does not want
you to ruin it... In such cases you can beam the energy to the crown.
•2 Eyes: Beam the energy into the eye area but maintain gentle
contact by placing Sandwich the head area: Stand to the right of the
person, placing your right hand
•3 Forehead: The heel of your hand gently on the forehead line on
their forehead while your left hand supports the back of their head of the
person's shoulders
•4 Throat: Stand behind the client and gently place the heels of your
hands on the chest wall, beaming the energy to the throat area. Do not
touch the throat area directly You can place your hands in a V like position
on the central chest wall ensuring that the breast and throat area is not
directly touched. If this is not possible leave this position out
Hand positions for chair treatment – pg 76
•5 Shoulders: Move back to the shoulder area, placing each of your
hands on each shoulder

•6 Heart: Stand to the right side of the client and sandwich the area by
placing your right hand on the central chest wall and your left hand on the
client's back. Ensure that you do not touch the breast area. If you prefer
you could beam the energy into the front area while maintaining contact
by touching the persons back

•7 Solar Plexus: Sandwich the area over the solar plexus area as you did
with the heart position. Alternatively, use the universal position and place
your left hand on the central chest area and your right hand on the solar
plexus area

•8 Heart: Sandwich the area by placing your right hand on the sacral
area and your left hand on the client's back. Ensure that you do not touch
any sensitive areas. If you prefer you could beam the energy into the front
area while maintaining contact by touching the persons back

•9 Right Arm:
•Place your right hand under the person's right hand, interlocking at the
thumbs. Keeping your right hand where it is, you can place your left hand
at the elbow area and the shoulder area.

•10 Right Leg:

•Place your right hand on the person's right foot/ankle. Keeping your right
hand where it is, you can place your left hand at the knee area and the
hip area.

•At all times keep your hands on the outer aspect of the person's upper leg.
Never go beyond the midline of the trouser

•11 Left Arm: The same technique as used for the right arm is used
except this time your left hand is under the person's left hand

•12 Left Leg: The same technique as used for the right leg is used.

Reiki and Pregnancy – pg 81
•Reiki is both safe and extremely beneficial to an unborn child and a pregnant mother

•Reiki can help during pregnancy in various practical ways too such as it:
• Alleviates morning sickness
• Reduces stress and tiredness
• Can be used to treat painful muscles, joints or the spine
• Strengthens the bond between a mother and her baby.
• When a mother who is attuned to Reiki places her hands on her tummy she is passing pure unconditional love and healing to
her unborn child
• Nourishes the foetus with love and the universal life force and gently comforts, protects and
envelops the unborn baby
• Accelerate the recovery time of the mother and baby after the birth.
• It is especially good for caesareans sections and healing the various scars and stitches often associated with childbirth
• Vitalise and nourish the mother’s milk if the baby is breast fed
• Treat cradle cap, colic

•Important Note: Always consult your doctor no matter how trivial it may seem if you
are concerned about your baby.
Reiki and Children – page 82
•Reiki can be used to treat your children throughout their lives.
• From the early days and months through puberty, adolescence and into adulthood.

•Instinctively we touch or kiss our children better when they fall or injure themselves,
• with Reiki we speed up the healing process and boost their own natural healing abilities.
•Reiki is wonderful for all their aches, pains and discomfort, (constipation)

•Reiki is a special gift you can share with your children too.

•Use Reiki at bedtime to help your children drift off to sleep and it balances your child’s
mind body and spirit leading to a clearer more focussed approach to life.
•When a child has an accident they often cry because of the shock.
• Treat your child by placing one of your hands on their solar plexus and the other at the base of the
spine.
•It is a legal requirement that children up to the age of sixteen (16) years must be
accompanied by a parent/guardian during the Reiki treatment
Reiki and Animals – page 82
Reiki Second Degree Training – page 83
•Prerequisites:
• Completion of the Reiki Level 1 or first-degree training class is required.

•Second Degree Attunement:

•Level 2 or second-degree training focuses further on practicing Reiki on others, as well as an
expanded opening of the energy channels with the Level 2 attunement.

•Description:
•Reiki Symbols. The Reiki symbols allow the practitioner to actually connect to and activate a
response from a higher level of consciousness and deeply connect to the universal energy and
qualities that the symbols represent.
•This includes the ability to power up more, focus on mental and/or emotional healing and also
the ability to provide distance Reiki, sending healing energy to individuals, places or instances
wherever they may be.

•Due to the intensity of the attunement process, I would normally recommend that at least 21
days pass between receiving the Level 1 and Level 2 attunements.
Reiki Third Degree Training – page 83
•Prerequisites:
