18, 1982) was a Russian-American
linguist and literary theorist.

Jakobson proposes that each of these six factors


(addresser, message, context, contact, code, and
addressee) determines a different linguistic function.

6 components:
1. Addresser- also sender.
2. Addressee- the receiver.
3. Context- background of the culture and situation.
4. Message- the idea to be express.
5. Code - how does communication begin.
6. Contact- ways in which message is conveyed.

1. Cognitive- how those the receiver respond.


2. Emotive- feelings and attitudes of sender.
3. Conative- how does the receiver respond.
4. Phatic- establishing a bond, “how are you?”
5. Metalingual- how does the language work?
6. Poetic- form and style of message.

Roman Jakobson’s model of verbal communication

In 1950 Roman Jakobson (Russian linguist) introduced a


theory concerning the purposes of the language used in
human communication.

This model of communications functions consists of two


layers of description:

1. The various elements of language use


(factors/components of verbal communication)

2. What humans do with the language when they use it
