    The nitrogen cycle begins with nitrogen gas in the air being fixed by bacteria or lightning into nitrates, which are absorbed by plants as nutrients to create proteins. Plants are then eaten by animals, and when organisms die their remains are broken down by bacteria and fungi, releasing nitrogen back into the air or ground in a form usable by plants to restart the cycle.

    Nitrogen Cycle

    Beginning
    At the beginning of the cycle the nitrogen from
    the air is waiting to be fixed by either bacteria or
    a rare occurrence of lightning.
    Stage 2
    Nitrogen fixation by bacteria turns the N2 into
    NO3, nitrates.The plants can then absorb these as
    nutrients creating protein for them. Once they
    have grown animals then eat the plants.
