Corrosion

This is when a metal turns into ions

Only iron rusts
Feroxyl indicator shows not before the age can see the red/brown flakes
Fe---}Fe2+----}Fe3+
Indicator yellow --}blue
O2+2H2O+4e---}4OH+

All contain feroxyl indicator. Blue immediately

Salt(og) and acid contain ions (H+,Cl-,Na4 etc)

The presence of ions increases the rate of rusting
Water and oxygen are needed for rusting
Boiling water removes oxygen and oil prevents more entering:no rusting
CaCl2 absorbs water and the bung prevents more entering:no rusting

Physical protection stops water and oxygen from touching the iron/steel
Examples:
Paint
plastic(agar and brake cable)
electropainting
galvanising(painting with molten zinc)

Feroxyl
Magnesium- Copper- indicator
goes pink goes blue

Negative electrodec supplies electrodes and prevents rusting when running

Car bodies are connectedf to the negative terminal of a car battery to prevent
rusting

More reactive metals

.scratched paint reacts to
rusting
Zinc blocks Scratched galvanising offers Salt water
to corrode sacrificial protection and
first and oxygen,so
these can be bad
replaced corrosion
without

dock

Less reactive
Food “tins” are steel coated on the inside with tin
