Perfect Tense

Present Perfect
Present Perfect is similar to Past Simple in one way – the ed ending of regular verbs.

For example:

I walked to school yesterday. – Past Simple

I have walked to school. – Present Perfect.

Present Perfect = have + past participle (Verb 3)

Irregular verbs in Present Perfect have various endings although the most
common is en.

Eat ate eaten.

I have eaten a delicious sandwich.


Present Perfect - Exercises
1. Read the situations and write sentences. Use the following verbs:

arrive break fall go up grow improve lose

1. Tom is looking for his key. He can’t find it.


He has lost his key.
2. Margaret can’t walk and her leg is in plaster.
She has broken her leg.
3. Last week the bus fare was 80 pence. Now it’s 90.
It has gone up.
4. Maria’s English wasn’t very good. Now it’s better.
Her English has improved.

5. Dan didn’t have a beard before. Now he has a


beard.
He has grown a beard.

6. This morning I was expecting a letter. Now I have it.

My letter has arrived.

7. The temperature was 20 degrees. Now it is only 12.

The temperature has fallen.

Present Perfect – just, already and yet
Just = a short time ago

Are you hungry? No, I’ve just had lunch.


Hello, have you just arrived?

Already = something happened sooner than expected.

What time is Mark leaving?


He’s already gone.

Yet = until now.

The speaker is expecting something to happen.


Has it stopped raining yet?

1. After lunch you go to visit a friend at her house. She says,


“Would you like something to eat?” You say, “No thank you,
…I’ve just had lunch.
2. Joe goes out. Five minutes later the phone rings and the caller
says, “Can I speak to Joe?” You answer…
He’s just gone out.
3. You’re eating in a restaurant. The waiter thinks that you have
finished and takes your plate. You say, “Wait a minute!”…
I’ve not finished yet.
4. You are going to a restaurant tonight. You phone to reserve a table.

No, I’ve already done it.
