Definition of the Level 2 Network (N2)

Level 2 network (N2 for Niveau 2) is the communication network that

encompasses the entire plant process environment. This environment
comprises a network infrastructure and application servers for the
process. Management of the latter (i.e., process management) lies in the
responsibility of each plant.

Connected to the Level 2 network (N2) are the following:

PLCs / Servers for flow control

PLCs / Servers for plant supervision
Operations PCs / Server for production ressource tracing
Operations PCs / Identified Web servers
Operations PCs / Backup server
Operations PCs / Security server
(Antivirus, Operating system update)
Operations PCs / Teleservice server

Definition of the Level 1 Networks (or: Data Networks)

The Level 1 Networks (N1 for Niveau 1) are communication networks that
interconnect the actual plant equipment, except the equipment belonging
to the field bus sector and the applications that are encompassed by the
island processes (installed by the suppliers of the equipment links).

Connected to the Level 1 network (N1) are the following:

PLC / Operations PC
PLC / Robot (other than those connected to the field bus)
PLC island / PLC other islands
PLC / special equipment (e.g., dynamic labels)
Operations PC / remote operator panel
Operations PC / Zone operator panel

IP Addressing Plan of the Level 1 Network (N1)

All production islands connected to the Level 1 network have

identical IP addressing plans.

Level 0 and Level 1 networks are completely isolated from the Plant
network.

Level 2 networks (N2) (control, tracing) that are connected to the Plant
network make use of equipment that is independent from Level 0 and Level
1 networks. Their IP address is managed and provided by the factories.
The two network cards of the MOP computer must be assigned to two
different networks.

The two Level 1 (N1) and Level 0 (N0) networks (Profinet) must be located
in the same logic network in order to enable the Level 0 PC card in the Main
Operator Panel (MOP) to specify the parameters for these two networks.
