DISTANCE TIME
GRAPHS Aims
To be able to describe what is shown in a distance time
graph
To be able to draw a distance time graph

A straight diagonal line

shows the object is
moving at a constant
speed

A horizontal line shows
that the object has
stopped moving

A car sets of at a slow constant speed, it stops
briefly to refuel before setting off at a faster
constant speed until it reaches its destination.
It is stopped for a while before it returns

Time (minutes)
Draw a distance time graph for a car which travels at a
constant speed for 90 minutes until it is 60 miles from
home. It then stops for 30 minutes before traveling for 60
minutes a constant speed covering 30 miles.

Time Distance at End of that Time

120 60

180 90
So scales of the graph have to go up to
180 for time and 90 for distance

A car travelled 2000m in 10 minutes. At

what speed was it travelling?

2000
Speed = 10 = 200 metres per minute
Find the Answer to these Questions

1. A car travelled 500 miles in 10 hours. How fast was it

travelling?
2. A car travelled 10,000km in 50 hours. How fast was it
travelling?
3. How long would it take for a car driving at 50 miles an
hour to travel 300 miles?
4. How long would it take a runner running 10 miles an
hour to run 30 miles?
5. If a car travelled for 7 minutes at 400 metres per
minute how far will it have travelled?
6. If a person ran for half an hour at 200 metres per
minute how far would they have run?
