The document discusses electricity and its importance. It defines electricity as usually being generated from energy sources like fossil fuels and explains that matter is made up of atoms containing a nucleus of protons and neutrons surrounded by electrons. It also describes static electricity as the accumulation of electric charges on surfaces caused by friction and not involving continuous movement of charged particles.

The Atom and Its parts The matter is made up of atoms, which are made-up of even smaller parts. The nucleus is the part located at the center of the atom is based. The nucleus consists of two kinds of particles: protons and neurons. Protons are the positively charged particles in the nucleus, while neutrons are the particles without charge. All protons have the same charge. Protons and neutrons make up the same mass of an atom. Children’s House A Montesorri School Surrounding the nucleus are the electrons. Electrons are the negatively charged particles of an atom. All electrons have the same charge, which is equal in value with the charge of a proton but opposite in sign. While protons are stationary within the nucleus of an atom, electrons can jump from one atom to another. Hence, the charge of an object, or a part of an object, depends on how much excess electrons it has (negative) or how few its electrons are compared to protons (positive).

Static electricity is the accumulation of electric charges on the surface of objects. This phenomenon is usually caused by friction. It is called “static” because it does not involve continuous movement of charged particles.
