What is listening
Skill ?
•Listening involves receiving sound,
understanding the message
conveyed in the sounds you hear,
evaluating the message, and
responding to it.
•Poor listening leads to assumptions
& misunderstandings. These lead to
errors & mistakes while taking
effective decisions.
• Is listening and Hearing both same?
• Listening and Hearing is not the same.
Hearing is the first stage of listening. Hearing occurs when our
ears pick up sound waves which are then transported to our
brain. This stage is ours sense of hearing.

Process of Listening.
• Hearing
• Filtering
• Comprehending
• Remembering
• Responding.
Importance and Needs of listening Skills.

1. Builds Empathy
• Empathy is essential to effective listening. Therefore,
it would be best if you mirrored the emotions the
speaker has.
• For example, if the speaker’s face expresses
sadness or joy, your facial expressions and words
should also express similar emotions. Empathy
towards the speaker takes concentration and
consumes energy, allowing open communication
and establishing relationships.
2. Listening is the foundation of all
communication.
• Listening well means listening not only
with your ears but also with your eyes
and body language so that the speaker
knows that his or her message has been
received.

When you make the effort to listen to someone, they


recognize your interest. This makes them more
comfortable sharing with you and being open. If you
were only half-listening, not making eye contact, or
glancing at your phone, . They won’t trust you to
respect their thoughts and feelings.

• When two people are talking, it’s good if they’re both talking
and listening. If one person is doing all the talking while the
other just standing around waiting for their turn, or
daydreaming.

listen well, we can understand what the other person is saying and respond
in a way that is helpful and supportive.

ideas , hear different perspectives & prevent
misunderstandings.

• When you’re learning new language, you no doubt
practice speaking a lot. Hearing the language you
want to learn is a big part of mastering it.
Audiobooks, music, & movies are good resources.

important to your success. People who are good
listeners are more likely to retain information,
understand what’s being required of them, and ask
the right questions. This is a valuable skill in group
projects and meetings.
