What is Morphology?

oFromkin & Rodman said, morphology is the study of word

formation and internal structure of words (1988).

oO’Grady stated that morphology is the systems of categories

and rules involved in word formation and interpretation (2016)
Scope of morphology
• The main idea of morphology is as a component of
grammar that deals with the internal structure of words
and also relates to the internal structure of complex
words.
What is a word?

• O’Grady (2016) defines a “word” as the smallest free

form in a language.

• Free form means that an element can occur only by

itself.
For example:
1. The birds left.

2. Speaker A: What are those things in the tree?

Speaker B: Birds
Why do we need to learn
morphology?
• Morphology plays an important role in
linguistics awareness.

• By studying morphology, students could

increase the vocabulary knowledge since
students could comprehend the word structure.
