LC: Identifies claims explicitly or implicitly

made in a written text

a. Claim of fact
b. Claim of policy
c. Claim of value
Identifying claims explicitly and implicitly made in a
written text is important because it helps readers to
understand the author's main argument or purpose. By
recognizing the claims, the author is making readers
evaluate the strength of the author's reasoning and
evidence, and develop their own informed opinions on
the topic. By identifying these different types of claims,
readers can better understand the author's perspective
and the purpose of the writing. This can help them to
critically evaluate the text and form their own opinions
based on the evidence presented.

you need to look for clues or make inferences
to understand its meaning.

God’s plan.” Rosie left the stage with tears in her eyes

The Small Key (Excerpt) by Paz Latorena
On the porch, a woman past her early twenties stood regarding the scene
before her with eyes made incuriously by its familiarity. All around her the
land stretched endlessly it seemed, and vanishes into the distance. There
were dark, newly plowed furrows where in due time timoruous seedling
would give rise to sturdy stalks and golden grain, to a rippling yellow sea in
the wind and sun during harvest time. A promise of plenty and reward for
hard toil! With a sigh of discontent, however, the woman turned and
entered a small dining room where a man sat over a belated midday meal.

She picked up her luggage and walked outside, where her husband and son
waited to drive her home. No hugs and no kisses were allowed. A tired and
melancholic smile was hiding behind the mask she wore at that moment. As
soon as they got home, she hauled her things up to the second floor, their
guest room, which will be her place for quarantine. She would do her best to
keep her distance, wash her hands often, and always wear a mask if she had
been exposed. “It had already been seven days since I hugged you… seven
days more before I could finally hold you in my arms again,” she whispered.
