Mauss viewed gift giving as
binding people together in a
social relationship
Mauss argued that gifts are
never "free."
Mauss distinguished between three obligations:
• Giving: the necessary initial step for the
creation and maintenance of social
relationships
• Receiving: for to refuse to receive is to reject
the social bond
• Reciprocating: in order to demonstrate one's
own liberality, honor and wealth
According to him, self has two faces :
• Moi refers to a person’s sense of who he is

• Personne is composed of the social concepts


of what it means to be who he is
