Characteristics of phrasal verbs
Some phrasal verbs don’t have an object, that is, they don’t answer the
questions what or to whom? For example: Get up, go out.
Some phrasal verbs have an object, that is, they answer the questions what or to
whom? For example: Put on, turn on.
Separable phrasal verbs have an object that you can put before or after the particle
(preposition or adverb). For example: Turn off the lights or Turn the lights off.
When the object is a pronoun, it always goes between the verb and the particle
(preposition or adverb). For example: Turn them off, not Turn off them.
Inseparable phrasal verbs have an object that always goes after the phrasal verb
because you cannot separate it. For example: I’m looking for my
keys. Not: I’m looking my keys for.
