CBD SUPPLEMENTATION AND ATHLETIC

PERFORMANCE

CBD • CBD, Cannabidiol, is a single compound found in the
Cannabis plant.

• Cannabis is a plant of the Cannabaceae family,

containing more than eighty active chemical
compounds. The most commonly known compounds are
delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol
(CBD).

• CBD’s anticonvulsant properties are what initially

drew scientific interest, but increasing evidence of
other therapeutic effects has attracted the attention of
other clinical and non-clinical populations, including
athletes.

sport performance is lacking
EFFECTS ON ATHLETIC - Understanding the short and long-term effects of CBD on human
PERFORMANCE performance in athletes will require well-controlled, athlete-
specific research, with applied performance outcomes

• Additional research will be required to understand the dose–
SUMMARY response of CBD effects, considering methods of consumption,
timing around exercise and CBD concentrations. Such data are
essential for weighing the evidence for or against prohibition
both in and out of competition.
• The use of CBD by athletes is most relevant to recovery during
training and while in competition.
• CBD shows promise for improving athlete pain and recovery
through several potential mechanisms, although evidence to
support this to date is extremely limited.
• The use of CBD requires prudent attention to local regulations
as contamination with prohibited cannabinoids could trigger
doping violations.
