The Impact of

E-learning On
Quality of Primary Education
during Covid-19: A Study  from
Students’ and Teachers’
Perspectives in Baram District,
Sarawak.Malaysia.
Background of Study
Background of Study

• E-learning has become indispensable everywhere, especially after the Covid-19

pandemic. It was the ultimate alternative for the traditional classroom education in all
countries worldwide.
• The Malaysian Education Blueprint(2012-2025) emphasizes effort to leverage
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to improve the quality of learning
across the country.
• The Malaysian Ministry of Education also seek to  leverage ICT to improve the quality
of education to under-served groups such as rural and under-enrolled schools.
• Based on a survey by Malaysian Ministry of Education, involving around 900,000
students, it is found that 36.9% do not own any devices, 46% have a smartphone, 9%
have a laptop, 6% have a personal computer and only 5.8% own a tablet.
(Yeoh,2020."MCO:As lessons move online, local teachers and students struggle with
uneven Internet access." The Star Online).
In 2020, there were about  2.74 million students that were enrolled in government
primary schools in Malaysia.(Published By Statista Research Department, Oct 5,2022)
 Background of study
• The students in Malaysian schools were directly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
With school closure during Covid-19, most children in Malaysia had experienced a
great loss in education progress. As many as 40% had not been able to attend online
classes due to the lack of digital devices or Internet connection.(Amar Singh et.al.Our
Children’s Learning Loss: A Path To Post Covid School Recovery In Malaysia,9 May
2022)
• Based on a study, the findings  indicated that the lower primary students (Primary1-3)
display significant positive behaviour compared to the upper secondary students
mainly because they find online learning more novel and interesting. (Thang et.al
International Journal of Innovation, Creativity and Change,Vol.6,Issue 2022).
• However, students not only faced the  lack electronic devices and the necessary
technology(Chung et al.,2020a; The Star,2020), but also problems such as an
unconducive home environment (Hawati &Jarud, 2020;Shahzad et al.,2020).
• According to a study, flexibility, accessibility, technology skills, government policy and
attitude and behaviour were found to be factors that lead to the online learning
practices  among primary school teachers in Malaysia.(International Journal of
Management(IJM), Vol.11, Issue10, Oct 2020.)
