Burglary
Burglary is one of the most frequently committed crimes in big cities, such as New York, Tokyo,
Jakarta, Surabaya, and Semarang. Therefore, it is very important that investigators be thoroughly
knowledgeable of procedures utilized to bring the cases to a successful solution.
Burglary investigations involve both residential and commercial properties. The following
guidelines are usually used to assign burglaries to police investigators: unusual or unique modus
operandi (M.O.); victims present during crime; safe involved; property taken sometimes includes
firearms; serious physical injury received by the victims or witness; forensic laboratory personnel
lifts a print declared of value by latent print expert; and same or similar crime within a six-month
period.
One of the functions of police investigator is to conduct a follow-up investigation on all
burglaries that fit within the aforementioned guidelines. It is the investigator’s job to:
Interview the officer who conducted preliminary investigation (reporting officer) and latent print
team as soon as possible;
Respond to crime scene and interview victim;
Search crime scene for physical evidence and process scene when required for physical evidence;
Canvass area for witnesses;
Gather as much information as possible on property taken, including serial numbers;
Examine point of entry and exit.
What do you think of the following factors; finger prints, alarm system, registered confidential
informant, crime patterns, suspects arrested for previous burglaries, etc.? Are they also important
factors to be taken into consideration?
