Norway was ruled for centuries by several kings who ruled only areas
restricted by territory. In the 10th century, King Harald Hårfagre is the one
who manages to
unify the country in the form of a single kingdom. For the next 400 years
Norwegian leaders
seize Iceland and Greenland and at the same time organize raids through
vast parts of
Europe. At this time Norway acquires the status of a great trading power.
Unfortunately
Short however, the country is hit by the plague at the end of the 14th century and
half of the population perishes. All
history then Norway enters into a union with Denmark that lasts until the
beginning of the
XIXth century. Then the union with Sweden followed, and it won its
independence only in 1905. Once
that was realized, the country gives up its traditional neutrality. The post-
war period stands out
through state reconstruction and the development of an effective social
protection system. The economy
develops rapidly once the oil exploitations begins in the 70s. Citizens vote
in 1994
• against entering the EU.
The Rural culture continues to play an
important role in the

strong romantic-nationalist movement, which
