READING SKILL # 3

SEQUENCE OF
EVENTS
2

What is sequencing in reading comprehension?

Sequencing refers to the identification of the components of a

story — the beginning, middle, and end — and also to the
ability to retell the events within a given text in the order in
which they occurred. The ability to sequence events in a text is
a key comprehension strategy, especially for narrative texts.
3

How do you learn reading sequencing?

• Read Aloud
• Once you have read the story, make lists about the events that
occurred, trying to arrange them sequentially. Sentence strips
work well for this type of activity, since events can be
written on individual strips and then rearranged as necessary
to put the events in the correct order.
4

How does knowing the order of the events help

you understand a reading text?
✘ Teaching and helping readers understand the
importance of order of events helps them
deepen comprehension. The ability to correctly
identify beginning, middle, and end allows
readers to retell the story later and makes the task of
remembering important events manageable.
Why is sequencing important?
5

Sequencing refers to putting events or information in a specific order. The ability

to sequence requires higher-order thinking skills, from recognizing patterns to
determining cause and effect and more. Sequencing helps students understand
and organize material they've learned as well as helps them solve problems.
6

What is the difference between retelling and

sequencing?
✘ Sequencing is putting the events in
the story in the order they
happened. Retelling is reading a story, then
telling what happened in the story (without
using the book to retell).
