The traditional food of England has long been recognised for its
simplicity of ingredients and flavour. However, England has a
complex history which means that people from all over the world
have settled in this country, bringing their favourite traditional
flavours and techniques.
MEAL TIMES
• BREAKFAST: It is substantial as it consists of porridge with milk and sugar or salt, eggs (boiled, fired,
scrambled), bread and butter with marmalade or jam, toast. They also drink tea or coffee.
• ELEVENSES: Just some snacks between meals, e.g. carrots, apples, a slice of cake.
• BRUNCH: It is the mixture of breakfast and lunch. This is a late breakfast and they don’t have lunch
then.
• LUNCH: Traditionally, lunch is just a sandwich and some snacks.
• AFTERNOON TEA (FIVE
O’CLOCK TEA): It is not served
at 5 o’clock, but it is some English
tea with cakes and biscuits
• DINNER: This is the main meal
for a family when they have some
kind of cooked meat with a side
dish
• SUPPER: late night dinner, a
sandwich, for example

ALE AND OTHER DRINKS
After tea beer is the most popular drink
in England. Dark ale and a porter –
famous brands – which they prefer.
Of course we shouldn’t forget about gin,
whiskey, wine and rum either.
