Why Study Vibrations?
Some Classical Examples of Bad Vibration
Failure of Tacoma Narrows Bridge in 1940

Collapsed within few months after opening to traffic.

It began to move vertically in windy conditions due to resonance
Fatigue failure of aircraft fuselage-Aloha Airlines flight #243

In 1988, the top part of the fuselage of a Boeing 737 of Aloha airlines tore away
at a flight altitude of 24,000 feet, due to fatigue failure.
Other examples of bad vibrations
• Vibrations in aircrafts, trains, ships and
automobiles
• Vibrations of structures during earthquakes

In some cases, vibrations are also good!!

Music, vibration of ear-drum, heart
