THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF ARTS

COLOR
WHAT IS COLOR?
• Color is the element which attracts the onlooker the most. Colors are important in
each and every object around us. Color lends peace, pleasure, or sadness to the
mind. Some colors are cheerful, whereas others are depressing. Colors reflect the
interest and personality of the person and helps in enhancing it.
COLOR WHEEL
WHAT IS COLOR WHEEL?
• It consists of twelve fundamental colors, namely, the primaries, which are equally
distant from each other at the color wheel. If straight lines are connected to it’s
center, these lines will form an equilateral triangle. Each of the secondary colors is
located exactly between two primary colors. They also form an equilateral triangle.
The primaries and secondaries are commonly known as the six standard colors and
the colors between them are called the intermiediates.
COLOR VALUE
WHAT IS COLOR VALUE?
• This is the lightness or darkness of a color in relation to black and white. It is the
amount of light in an object. A surface that absorbs all the colors or light rays will
appear black. A surface that reflects will colors equally will appear white. Values of
colors are divided into tints and shades. Tints may be produced by adding white
pigment or water. Adding a little black pigment produces shades of a color. Black
and white are omitted. Dark orange is brown and yellowish brown is tan. Pink is tint,
while navy blue is shade. Indigo is blue violet and vermillion is brilliant red.
