Identify the Be-
verbs
The word am, is, are, was, and were
are forms of the verb “be” that express
a state of being or condition. They are
used as linking verbs to connect the
subject to the information about the
subject in the sentences.
When using a be-verb in a sentence,
there are some points the learner needs
to remember:
• The be-verb am is used as linking
verb together with the pronoun I.
• The be-verb is links to singular
subjects in the present time.
• The be verb are is used for plural
subjects and for the pronoun you.
• The linking verb was links to singular
subject in the past time.
• The linking verb were is used
together with a plural subject in the
past time frame, too.
