Welcome to another exciting trip as we go through the English language. This time, we'll
be discussing Parallel structures!
It is not only necessary to be able to write. In writing, parallelism in sentence design aids
in the creation of austerity, rhythm, emphasis, and clarity. By developing word patterns that
readers can readily follow, parallel structure improves the readability of text by creating word
patterns that readers can easily follow.
This material explains what parallelism means in language and the different sorts of
parallel structures.
You are supposed to use parallel structure in this material by:
a. defining parallelism and parallel structure; and
b. identifying different parallel structure types.
Assessment activities and enrichment activities are also provided to ensure that you’ll be
able to learn more about parallel structures.

Parallel Structure
Parallel structure means using the same pattern of words to show that two or more ideas have
the same level of importance. This can happen at the word, phrase, or clause level. The usual
way to join parallel structures is with the use of coordinating conjunctions such as "and" or "or."
To make our writing complete and more readable, we'll now discuss the many sorts of parallel
structures. The next sections will go through three different forms of parallel structures.
A. Example of parallel words
Mary likes hiking, swimming, and bicycling.
parallel elements – hiking, swimming, and bicycling.
B. Example of parallel phrase
My dog likes not only to play fetch but also to chase cars.
Parallel element- to play fetch, to chase cars
C. Example of parallel clause
Please return the calculator after we have had some coffee or when your class is over.
Parallel element- after we had some coffee and when your class is over

In the activities that follow, you will need to determine whether the sentences have parallel
structures or not.
Activity 1: Directions: Read the item below. Then decide whether or not it contains an error in
parallel structure. Write the correct letter. You might want to consult the rules before you make
your choice!

Activity 2: Directions: Underline the parallel structure in each sentence.

3. In my spare time, I enjoy reading novels or watching television.
4. He should have broken his engagement to Jenn and married Regine instead.
5. I looked for my book but I couldn't find it.

Directions: Write a reflection with 5 sentences about the importance of parallelism in
constructing
sentences or essays. Make use of the correct parallel structure of words, phrases, and clauses.

REFERENCE CARD
Parallelism- Parallelism is the matching of the forms of words, phrases, or clauses within a
sentence.
Structure- the arrangement of and relations between the parts or elements of something
complex.
Clause- A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb that have a relationship.
Phrase- A phrase is made up of a head (or headword)—which determines the
grammatical nature of the unit—and one or more optional modifiers.
Coordinating conjunction -is a conjunction that connects words, phrases, and clauses that
are coordinate, or equal to each other. There are seven coordinating conjunctions: for, and,
nor, but, or, yet, so. They can be remembered using the acronym FANBOYS.
