INTRODUCTION
● Addiction is a disease that affects your
brain and behavior.

● Drug abuse is when you use legal or


illegal substances in ways you shouldn’t.

● When you’re addicted to drugs, you can’t


resist the urge to use them, no matter how
much harm the drugs may cause.

● Addiction turns to abuse when you start


using drugs excessively.
HISTORY
Illicit drug abuse and addiction can be traced back for centuries. Drug
usage goes as early as 3400B.C and it was red opium poppy used by
Egyptians. Modern drugs include heroin, weed, cocaine, meth etc. no
matter the time, usage of illicit drugs has always been a menace to
society and relevant government bodies have always tried to mitigate
its usage.
HISTORY
Usage of illicit drugs is an international issue and
has been acknowledged by United Nations
Organization and therefore international day
against drug abuse and drug trade is celebrated on
26 June every year since 1989. it is celebrated to
acknowledge the efforts of drug enforcing agencies
and the people who fought this addiction.

Drugs can be categories by the way in which they affect our body:

Slow down the function of the central nervous system.

● HALLUCINOGENS:
Affect your sense and change the way you see, hear, taste, smell or feel
things.

Speed up the function of the central nervous system.

● Easy availability
Drugs (alcohol, nicotine) are available conveniently .
● Peer pressure
peers may also put individuals on drug use
● Prescription drugs
excess use of prescribed drugs may also lead to addiction and abuse.
● Pop culture & music
use of drugs in movies, shows and music may also lead to drug usage.
● Depression
depression and anxiety may also lead to substance use
● Pleasure
one may use drugs to get happiness and feel better.
● Family problems
one may get into drugs due
to family problems or abusive
parents etc.

Economy:
Economic productivity can also suffer when a
portion of population is using drugs.
● Unemployment:
Use of drugs may cause people to lose their
jobs and they may also find it difficult to stay
employed.
● Poverty:
Drug abuse causes unemployment which further
causes poverty.
● Crime:
Drug abuse and addiction leads to many
dangerous crimes.
EFFECTS ON HEALTH
● Cardiovascular Diseases:
It can range from an abnormal heart rate to heart attack.
● Cancers:
Smoking cigarettes has been linked to cancer of the mouth, neck, stomach and
lungs.
● Gastrointestinal Effects:
Many drugs cause nausea and vomiting after use. Cocaine use causes abdominal
pain and bowel tissue decay.
● Mental Health Effects:
Chronic use of drugs leads to both short- and long-term changes in the brain, which
results in mental health issues.

● There should be more rehabilitation Centers.
● There should be crack down on drug manufacturing gangs by Law
enforcement agencies.
● There should be psychological help for people getting into drug addiction.
● There should be produce short films and drams showcasing side effects of
drug abuse to discourage younger generation from its use.
● There should be Strict drug enforcement law.
POLICIES
● There should be higher taxes on cigarettes and alcohol.
● There should be check and balance on chemicals used in illicit drug manufacturing
such as morphine, sulphates etc. never be sold to any buyer with government
license.
● There should be Medical drugs such as opioids, ibuprofen not sold to someone
with prescription.
● There should be use of social media( Facebook, Instagram) to warn general public
against drug addiction and its aftereffects.
● Government should make means to educate people that drug addiction isn’t taboo
can be treated as a normal illness.
