— Understanding the variables that will be used in this report–
Introduction: Understanding the Variables

The data we will be exploring is called ‘World Happiness Report 2017’.

-Number of Countries in the dataset: 155 countries

-Measurements:
1) Happiness Score
2)Happiness Rank

-Metrics– populated-weighted average score on a scale running from 0 to 10:


1) Economy GDP per Capita
2) Family: answers the GWP question: ‘If you were in trouble, do you have relatives or friends you can count on to help you whenever you
need them, or not?’
3) Health/ Life Expectancy: constructed based on data from the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Health
4) Freedom: answers the GWP question: “Are you satisfied or dissatisfied with your freedom to choose what you do with your life?”
5) Generosity: Regression of the answer to the GWP question: “Have you donated money to a charity in the past month?” on log GDP per
capita.
6) Trust in the Government / Corruption: answers to two GWP questions: “Is corruption widespread throughout the government in this
country or not?” “Is corruption widespread within businesses in this country or not?”

-Additional Variables (used to calculate the standard deviation):


1) lower whisker: the minimum value of the happiness score for each country
2) upper whisker: the maximum value of the happiness score for each country

Both Economic and Social Aspects Matter: The metrics that determine the most the happiness scores ( highest correlations), are,first , the GDP,
then how reliable their families are and the health metrics (life expectancy). Those are positively and strongly correlated to the happiness score.

On average, the happiness score globally is between [5.25 - 5.45]. The metrics that are highly correlated with it are averaging are follows[Over
the highest scores]: Average GDP= 0.98/2 - Average family= 1.19/2 -Average Health= 0.55/1. Those 3 numbers will be used when analyzing
the different continents for comparison purposes.

- Very Low Happiness Rank [20% unhappiest countries]: Sri Lanka & Bulgaria which all 3 scores are above average. Tunisia, Iran,
Albania, Iraq and Ukraine also have at least 2 scores above average and the other is not very low.

- Relatively high Happiness Rank [30% happiest countries]: Belize' s 3 scores are below average, however it is still among the (top 30%)
happiest nations.

Overall, except for the Democratic Republic of the Congo which data was missing from the Dataset, have a very low (red) to around
average (yellow) happiness Score.

The happiest countries in Africa are as follows such that 5/9 The Unhappiest countries in Africa are the ones above such
of them are North/Northwest African nations.Their average that most of them are South/West African nations. Their
happiness score is 5.24. average happiness score is 3.35.

Global Average

The distribution of happiness scores for the African countries is normally distributed with an average between 4 and 4.5.
However, 90% of African countries are below the global average (5.35) .

The average happiness rank is around 122, such that Algeria, records the highest happiness rank or 53.

Social Aspects matter the most:


The metrics that determine the most the happiness score ( highest correlations), are the GDP , then how reliable their families are and the health
metrics (life expectancy). Those are positively correlated to the happiness score.
When comparing them to the rest of the world, the average Health and GDP score are extremely low while the family score a below average.
Question 2: Why are North America and Australia & Oceania
the happiest two continents in the world?

Overall, the 5 countries in both those continents have a very high (green) happiness Score.

Global Average

All of the 5 countries’ happiness score are way above the global
average and are very close to the world happiest score.

The worst happiness rank amongst those countries is the 25th and
the average happiness score is around 7.1 .

All of the Economic and Social Aspects HIGHLY matter:


For those countries the different metrics are highly and
positively correlated to the happiness score especially for the
Freedom then Family, Health, and Generosity which are
almost PERFECTLY correlated to the score.

Overall all of the KPIs are very high which explains the very
high happiness score.
Question 3: Why isn’t Europe the happiest continent in the
world while it has the 7 happiest countries globally?

The countries in Europe vary from the happiest (majority) to relatively unhappy nations.

What distinguishes Europe is that it has the top


happiest countries in the world
(Norway/Denmark/Iceland..). The Top 10% of those
countries’ average happiness score is almost equal
to the world record ( 7.28).

However, there is a great disparity/gap between


European countries, such that one can find some of
the least happy countries in the world as well with a
score below the global average.

Economic and Social Aspects matter:


For those countries the GDP then Freedom and Family are
positively correlated to the happiness score.
Overall all of the KPIs are very high which explains the very
high happiness score.
