Mr Wyatt
Describe the two graphs below.
Risk of FAS

Birth Mass
Units of Alcohol drank Number of cigarettes smoked

2
Explain why a pregnant woman should avoid drinking alcohol
during pregnancy.

You should include the following details;

● What the placenta and umbilical cord are for

● How chemicals in the smoke could get to the foetus
● How this could affect the birth mass

3
Use the data to answer the questions below.

Which animal has the highest survival rate?

Human Baboon Clownfish Toad

What is the relationship between Number of 1 1 2500 1600
fertilisation method, number of young young

and survival rate? Use data to support Fertilisation Internal Internal External External

7
Explain why a pregnant woman should avoid drinking alcohol
during pregnancy.

You should include the following details;

● The placenta and umbilical cord connect the mother to the foetus, allowing the foetus to
get nutrients and oxygen
● If you drink alcohol, the alcohol can also get to the foetus through the placenta and
umbilical cord
● This can cause the baby to have fetal alcohol syndrome

8
Use the data to answer the questions below.

Humans have the highest survival rate.

If the animal uses internal fertilisation, the number of young is lower, and the survival rate
is higher. For example the baboon uses internal fertilisation, has 1 young and has a survival
rate of 60%.

Animals developing inside the uterus are better protected, the animal is much more likely
to survive, and so they don’t need to have more babies.
