Introduction of Myself
Mr. Gally D. Verdigar
I graduated BSED – English at St.
Louise de Marillac College of Bogo
and currently affiliated on the said
school, it is managed by the
Daughters of Charity Sisters. I am in
the academe for seven years.
Introduction to the Activity
Varied assessments are necessary to ensure that
twenty-first century students will develop vital skills
such as critical thinking and reasoning, problem solving
and decision making, information and communication
literacy, creativity and innovation and other essential
skills that will make them globally competent.
By and large, assessments must be thought of and
prepared carefully, administered correctly, corrected
and interpreted accurately (De Guzman and Adamos,
2015).
Introduction to the Activity
Assessment methods are the strategies, techniques,
tools and instrument for collecting information to
determine the extent to which students demonstrate
desired learning outcomes.

In the New Normal, education systems here and abroad

have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Often than
not, we sometimes hear about the hitches experienced by
both parents and students with distance learning, even
teachers are having a fair share of paramount challenges.
Most learning facilitators perceived to have difficulty in
meeting the twenty-first century skills as expected among
the 21st century learners.
1. What are current experiences in assessing student
learning in the delivery platforms that your institution
is utilizing?
(SHARE)
In the context of our school, St. Louise de Marillac
College of Bogo, Cebu Inc., the phenomenon brought by
the pandemic urges the teachers to enhance learning and
teaching strategies employing the Flexible Learning
Experience (FLEx) delivery mode which operates on the
principle of constructivism wherein exploration as
described by Corpuz and Salandanan (2015) is a favored
approach in order to encourage learners to seek knowledge
independently and to manage the pursuit of their goals.
Upon knowing that the instructions and strategies
implemented are not sufficient, less effective, and not so
engaging to students’, it thrust the teachers to assess the
assessment tools to ensure the validity of outputs.

Aside from Flexible Learning Experience

(FLEx), we also utilized the Online Plus
Modality intended for all Higher Education
students.
REFLECT

2. What are your reflections on

this?
(REFLECT)
In teaching and learning environment, assessment is an
essential component to measure learning outcomes.
Significant changes in the methods of teaching and learning
are observed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This phenomenon halted the normal way of delivering
education. Educators now are shifting their teaching
approach to suit the needs of the students. The traditional
way of teaching and learning approaches becomes
obsolete. To bridge the gap; flexible learning is introduced;
this modality caters distance learning in such a way that
students can access education through online classes,
printed modules or blended.
This is now the new normal.
(REFLECT)

However, the task of being an educator does not stop

with the giving of modules, handling synchronous classes
and giving of assignments virtually. It also covers a
multitude of laborious work to check and give feedback.
Momentarily, it will give temporary peace to teachers that
a day’s work is done, yet it is far from the truth. As much
as the teacher wants to be appeased by the idea, questions
will surface wondering if students learned something from
the discussion using the new modality. In this abrupt shift
of situation, teachers’ task in the new normal is to validate
students’ learning through finding ways to improve
assessment tools in flexible learning.
(REFLECT)

To conclude, assessment is a significant component in

learning and teaching environment and should encourage
learning to measure outcomes. Many significant changes in
the methods to teaching and learning in higher education
with the help of Massive Open Online courses, Virtual
Learning Environment, flipped classroom approaches, the
developing approach in learning and the probability of
more flexible modes of delivery.
ACT

3. How are you responding to the

current challenges?
(ACT)

It is in this regard, that the faculty

members are compelled to undergo action
research entitled “Enhancing Learners’
Performance through Improved Assessment
Methods in Flexible Learning” to help the
students in augmenting their academic
proficiency and assist the administration and
other faculty members to create a paradigm
shift in the context of assessment.
