INTRODUCTION

• Road network is considered the backbone of any economy and hence road projects are
included in major national projects.

• Road projects have a major impact during the construction and also during the
maintenance phase of the project.

• The appearance of distresses is also a major liability to the project that not only affects
the user comfort but also has a very deep impact is the prospect of sustainability.

How Damage Happens

● The surface layer of a bituminous road is the topmost layer that provides a
smooth driving surface.
● Surface layer damage can occur due to a variety of factors, including heavy
traffic, exposure to UV radiation, and freeze-thaw cycles. Cracks, potholes, and
rutting are common signs of surface layer damage.
● The base layer of a bituminous road is located beneath the surface layer and
provides additional support and stability.
● Base layer damage can occur due to poor drainage, inadequate compaction, or
excessive loading.

Mumbai
While BMC’s pothole tracking system shows that there are only around
900 potholes across the city and residents.
According to the data, of these, 432 potholes have been fixed.

METHODOLOGY
1 ) Different methods

• Throw and go method

• Spray and injection method
• Edge seal
• Use of non newtonian fluid
• Modified pothole filler truck

Time factor
The average cost of repairing a pothole

1. Cleaning the pothole: Cleaning the 1. Spray injection patching This method
pothole and preparing the site typically involves using specialized equipment that
takes about 15-30 minutes, depending on sprays a mixture of asphalt emulsion and
aggregate directly into the pothole can
the size and complexity of the pothole. typically be completed in 5-10 minutes
per pothole, making it a relatively quick
method.
2. Sealing the edges: Sealing the edges of the 2. Cold mix asphalt with additives: Some cold
repair with a sealant or crack filler typically mix asphalt products . These additives can
takes about 5-10 minutes reduce the curing time from several days to
just a few hours,
Overall, the total time required for a pothole overall , the time required for a pothole repair
repair using traditional methods can range using new techniques can be within hours
from 30 minutes to a few hours or more depending upon techniques
excluding curing

Conclusion

In conclusion, repairing potholes is a complex process that requires careful

consideration of cost, time, and methods. Delaying repairs can increase
costs and create safety hazards, while proper maintenance and timely
repairs can help reduce overall costs in the long run.

Road maintenance authorities must carefully plan repairs and choose the
most effective method for each situation to ensure the safety of drivers and
the longevity of the road surface.
