OBJECTIVE

• You will be able to recognize the definition of cultural


literacy
WHAT IS CULTURAL LITERACY

• is a term coined by Hirsch 1983


• referring to the ability to understand the sign and symbols
of a given cultural
• and being able to participate in its activities and customes
• as opposed to simply being a passive and outside
observer.
• the sign and symbols of a culture include both its formal &
informal language.
→its idioms & forms of expression , entertainment , values,
roles, traditions, etc.
→like, most of which are assumed and unstated.
→is simply familiarity with the information consired to be
common knowlegde in a culture.
CULTURAL LITERACY OF THE PHILIPPINES

• means having a broad understanding of the history and


political, economic, religious, social, intellectual, and
artistic traditions.
• to be culturally literarte, therefore means being well read i
those matters, including varioous points of view of them.
