Introduction
Magnetism
 Magnetism is a fundamental property of matter; it is generated by moving
charges, usually electrons. Atoms and molecules have electron orbitals that
can be paired (an even number of electrons cancels the magnetic field) or
unpaired (the magnetic is present). Magnetic fields exist as dipoles, where
the north pole is the origin of the magnetic field lines and the south pole is
the return. One pole cannot exist without the other.
 Magnetic susceptibility describes the extent to which a material becomes
magnetized when placed in a magnetic field. Three categories of susceptibility
are defined:
*Ferromagnetic is an object that can be strongly attracted by a magnet.
Examples are cobalt, iron, steel, nickel, alnico, alcomax.
*Paramagnetic are objects that are weakly attracted by magnets. Examples are
aluminum, platinum
*Diamagnetic are objects that are repelled by a magnet. Examples are bismuth,
zinc, gold, lead and table salt.
Biomagnetism??

• Biomagnetism Is the phenomenon of magnetic fields

produced by living organisms; it is a subset of
bioelectromagnetism.
• In contrast, organisms' use of magnetism in navigation
is magnetoception and the study of the magnetic fields'
effects on organisms is magnetobiology such as
Magnetocardiography, Magnetoencephalography,
Magnetogastrography using SQUID can measure fields
as low as 5x10 -18

In Human Body
The biomagnetic points used in biomagnetism:

A constant of human biomagnetism resides in the spinal

column and the head and this applies to both men and
women.
In the human body, biomagnetism is the result of blood
flowing through veins and arteries, nerve energy moving
at lightning speed through channels and meridians, and
slowing of lymphatic flow, from digestion, respiration, and
hair and nail growth, from that find we can assume to be
an overall electrical current, which can be measured in
millivolts and ranges between 0 and 70 millivolts. At 0,
you're dead or near death, and opposite the tuning fork,
70 millivolts, you can't go any higher, you're in great
shape.
In Organism
Did you know that in the body of Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) there is a
special organelle (component) called a magnetosome?
Magnetotactic bacteria are a group of bacteria that are able to navigate
and migrate by utilizing a magnetic field. Some types of these bacteria
have flagella that function as a pusher when moving. This type of bacteria
was first discovered by Richard P. Blakemore in 1975.
The magnetosome is composed of magnetite (Fe3 O 4 ) or greigite (Fe3
S 4 ) compounds which have much stronger magnetic properties
compared to synthetic magnets or those made by humans. The
magnetosome and the compounds contained therein are still being
studied and are thought to have great potential for use in the health
sector.
