The aim of the scan is to recognize opportunities and risks for

making strategic business decisions affecting the company.
The company gathers data about its environment as part of
the environmental scanning process and analyzes it to predict
the effects of environmental changes. This ultimately helps to

As seen from the above figure, environmental scanning in the

organization's setting should primarily identify opportunities and threats.
Once these are recognized, the organization can develop a strategy
that helps to maximize the possibilities and minimize the threats. Let us
take a quick look at the components of an organization’s setting before
looking at the important factors for environmental scanning.

As you can see above, an organization's internal environment consists of

different components, such as the value system, the organization's mission
/ objectives, structure, community, employee quality, trade unions, technical
capacities, etc. Inside the organization, these components lie and any
changes to them will influence the company's overall performance.

 Events - These are unique incidents that take place in a company's

multiple environmental sectors. These are necessary for the activity and/or
efficiency of the organization. Events may occur in the internal environment
or in the external environment. They can be monitored and recorded by
organizations.

 Trends - these are general courses of action. They are groups of events
that are similar or related that appear to travel in a particular direction. In
addition, patterns may be positive or negative. An organization may detect
any change in the intensity or frequency of the events indicating a change in
the respective region by analyzing patterns.

 Issues - Certain problems can arise during events and trends. These are
the subjects. Organizations aim to recognize potential concerns so that
corrective steps can be taken to nip them in the bud. Identifying emerging
problems, however, is a challenging job. Typically, emerging problems begin
with a shift in values or changes in which the issue is seen.

 Expectations - Some concerned parties, based on their concern for

problems, have demands. These demands are the expectations of people,
especially the consumers, who known the business.
