1.INTRODUCTION

1. Fins are extensions on exterior surfaces of objects that increase the rate of heat transfer to or from the object by
increasing convection. This is achieved by increasing the surface area of the body, which in turn increases the heat transfer rate by a
sufficient degree.

2. Consider a body with fins on its outer surface, with air flowing around it. The heat transfer rate depends on
 Shape and geometry of the external surface
 Surface area of the body
 Velocity of the wind (or any fluid in other cases)
 Temperature of surrounding

3. Fin performance is described in three different ways

 Effectiveness of a single fin
 Efficiency of a single fin
 Overall efficiency of an array of fins

3. STATE OF ART RELATED TO THE TOPIC OF INTEREST

• The fluid flow and heat transfer in treelike networks have received an increasing attention over the past
decade as the highly efficient transport processes observed in natural treelike structures can provide
useful hints for optimal solutions to many engineering and industrial problems.

• With the developments of analytical theory, numerical simulation, and experimental technique, research
interests shift from steady single-phase flow in macroscopic branching structures to transient
multiphase flow and heat transfer in micro- and nano-treelike networks. Applications of branching
structures and networks have been proposed in diverse fields, e.g., flow distributors, microfluidic
devices, fuel cells and batteries, microelectronic cooling, porous media and reservoir engineering,
fibrous and nanomaterials, power distribution, etc.

• Recent applications of treelike networks in engineering and industrial fields have also inspired the
optimal research in the view of thermodynamics. Bejan and others presented the thermodynamic
optimization of T and Y shaped branching structures by minimizing the overall flow resistance
encountered over a finite size territory.
