CALAMBA AND BINAN Teodora Alonso Realonda y Quintos best known as the mother of Dr. Jose Rizal. she is the first teacher of Rizal. It was she who first discovered that her son had a talent for poetry. Accordingly, she encouraged him to write poems. To lighten the monotony of memorizing the ABC’s and to stimulate her son’s imagination, she related many stories. Maestro Celestino – first private tutor of Rizal Maestro Lucas Padua- second tutor of Rizal Leon Monroy- a former classmate of Rizal’s father, became the boy’s tutor after Maestro Celestino and Maestro Lucas Padua. This old teacher lived at the Rizal home and instructed Jose in Spanish and Latin. Unfortunately, he did not lived long. He died five months later. When he was nine years old, his father sent him to Biñan to continue studying Latin, because Monroy died. June , 1869- Rizal left Calamba for Biñan. Paciano- he is the one who accompanied him when he arrived in Biñan. - acted as his second father. Leandro- cousin of Rizal. Paciano brought his younger brother to the school of Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz. Pedro- son of Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz. *First School Brawl in the afternoon of his first day in school, when the teacher was having his siesta, Jose met the bully, Pedro. Jose challenged Pedro to a fight. Tio Manuel- Rizal learned from him the art of wrestling. Andres Salandanan – classmate of Rizal who challenge him to an arm-wrestling match. Painting lesson in Biñan Juancho- was his teacher in painting - he gave Rizal lessons in drawing and painting for free. Jose Rizal and Jose Guevarra were the favorite painter of the class. Best Student in School Jose beat all Biñan boys in Academic studies. Some classmates were jealous that they inform to the teacher whenever Jose had fights outside of the school. Some also told lies to discredit him. End of Biñan Schooling Time came when jose learned all that Maestro Justiniano could teach him. The teacher informed Jose’s Parents that their son should be sent to college in Manila. Christmas season in 1870, Rizal received letter from his sister Saturnina informing him the arrival of the steamer Talim which would take him from Biñan to Calamba. Talim- the streamer that Jose rode. December 17, 1871- Saturday afternoon Jose left from Biñan after 1 year and a half schooling on the town. Arturo Camps- a frenchman and a friend of his father( Don Francisco), took care of Jose during the trip. Injustice to Hero’s Mother In 1872 before June - Doña Teodora was arrested on malicious charge that she aided her brother, Jose Alberto, in trying to poison Alberto’s wife. Jose Alberto- A rich Biñan landowner and a brother of Dona Teodora. - During his absence when he gone to Europe for a business trip, his wife abandoned their home and children. When returned to Biñan, he found her wife living with another man. However, the unfaithful wife connived with the Lieutenant of the guardia civil to fabricate evidence that her husband attempted to poison her, with Doña Teodora as an accomplice. Provincial jail in Santa Cruz capital of Laguna- where Doña Teodora jailed. The Lieutenant forced the hero’s mother to walk on foot from Calamba to Santa Cruz, a distance of more than 50 kilometers. Don Francisco de Marcaida and Don Manuel Mazano- most famous lawyers of Manila,defended Doña Teodora in court. After 2 and a half Years -The Royal Audiencia acquitted Doña Teadora. The Martyrdom of Gom-Bur-Za On January 20, 1872- the Cavity Mutiny flared up. February 17, 1872- Fathers Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora were executed. Father Jose Burgos- was the beloved professor and a friend of Jose’s older brother (Piaciano)in the college of San Jose. Piaciano was a trusted assistant of Burgos in the fight for the Filipinization of the parishes. Jose Rizal was nearly eleven years old when the tragic martyrdom of Gom-Bur-Za took place.Despite his tender age, he was deeply affected. It was another Spanish injustice, like that doneto his own mother.
