2 Reporting verbs

1 We use different reporting verbs such as suggest, remind, encourage, etc. to give
more detail about the purpose or attitude of what someone said.

2 Different reporting verbs are followed by different structures. Many reporting


verbs are followed by verb + (that) + clause, or verb + person + (that) + clause.

1 Here are some more reporting verbs followed by (that) + clause.

add, admit, argue, claim, complain, assure, convince, inform, promise,
deny, explain, mention, predict, reassure, remind, warn
promise, suggest, tell, think, warn

2 When we use a reporting verb and a (that) clause, we generally change the verb
tense back one tense.

I’ve just been promoted! 1 He claimed (that) he had just been promoted.

2 I promised him that I would buy a new one.

1 Reporting verbs followed by other structures do not always change the verb tense
of what was said.
