2 Reporting verbs
1 We use different reporting verbs such as suggest, remind, encourage, etc. to give
more detail about the purpose or attitude of what someone said.
It’s not fair! We won’t have enough 1 He complained (that) they wouldn’t have enough

2 When we use a reporting verb and a (that) clause, we generally change the verb
tense back one tense.
I’ve just been promoted! 1 He claimed (that) he had just been promoted.
1 Reporting verbs followed by other structures do not always change the verb tense
of what was said.

agree, ask, demand, offer, to + infinitive ‘We won’t go away!’
promise, refuse, threaten
They refused to go away.
advise, convince, encourage, person + to +
invite, order, persuade, remind, infinitive ‘Please, please, please come!’
tell, warn She persuaded us to come.
admit, apologize for, deny, preposition ‘I’m so sorry I forgot your name.’
insist on, suggest + -ing
She apologized for forgetting my name.
accuse/of, blame/for, person +
congratulate/on/for, preposition ‘Thank you so much for calling.’
praise/for, thank/for, + -ing They thanked us for calling.
warn/against
I’ll fire you if you’re late congratulate assure suggest deny threaten
again! She threatened to fire me if I was late again.
