objectives
• Define biodiversity
• List types of biodiversity
• Propose why there is need to protect biodiversity.
Biodiversity
• Biodiversity is the variety of the world’s organisms, including their
genetic diversity and the assemblage they from.
• Biological diversity, abbreviated as biodiversity, represented the sum
total of various life forms such as unicellular fungi , protozoa, bacteria,
and multicellular organisms such as plants, fishes, and mammals at
various biological levels including gens, habitats, and ecosystem.

HISTORY OF BIODIVERSITY
• Charles Darwin identified the first principal of the origin of modern
biodiversity, namely that all species were linked in a single great
phylogeny, or tree of life, and that all could be traced back to a
presumed single original species at some distant time in the
geological past
• The term Biodiversity was first coined by Walter G. Rosen in 1986

What is biodiversity?

• Biodiversity includes diversity within species , between

species and among ecosystem.
What is biodiversity?
• The spectrum of life on earth , in terms of variation In
• Genes,
• Populations,
• Species,
• Ecosystem,
• Interactions among them.

What is Environmental Science?
The study of how humans interact with
their environment
Our environment is everything that
surrounds us, both natural and man-
made.
Environment: the total or our surroundings
• All the things around us with which we interact
• Livings things
*Animals, plants, forests, fungi, etc.
• Nonliving things
* Continents, oceans, clouds, soil, rocks
• Our built environment
*Buildings, human-created living centers
Social relationships and institutions
Natural resources: vital to human survival
* renewable resources
• Perpetually available: sunlight, wind, wave energy
• Renew themselves over short periods: timber, water, soil
• These can be destroyed
• Nonrenewable resources: can be depleted
• Oil, coal, minerals
• “…The earth enables our people to survive, the environment must be
respected and maintain, As long as the earth remains healthy, the
people remain healthy”(long and fox, 1996)
Brainstorm
• With your partner/group, brainstorm at least 10 ways in which
destruction to the environment and depletion of resources can affect
our overall well being as a population
The “ecological footprint”
• The environment impact of a person or population
• Amount of biologically productive land + water for raw materials and
to dispose/recycle wasted
• Overshoot: humans have surpassed the earth’s capcity
Conclusion
• Environmental science helps us understand our relationship with the
environment and informs our attempts to solve and prevent
problems.
• Solving environmental problems can move us towards health ,
longevity, peace and prosperity.
• Environmental science ca help us find balanced solutions to
environmental probles.
