Introduction

National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a comprehensive framework to revamp education in India. It
aims to provide access, equity, quality, affordability and accountability in education. The policy has
been designed after 34 years and caters to the changing needs of the 21st century. NEP 2020 has brought
a paradigm shift in the education system with a focus on holistic development and multidisciplinary
approach.
National Education Policy In India
The first NEP was introduced in 1968, and subsequent revisions were made in 1986 and 1992.
The NPE aims to provide equal opportunities for education to all citizens regardless of their socio-
economic background. It also emphasizes the need for a flexible and relevant education system that can
adapt to changing social and economic needs. The policy also focuses on the use of technology in
education and the promotion of research and innovation.
Right to Education Act
The Right to Education (RTE) Act was passed in 2009 and mandates free and compulsory
education for all children aged 6-14 years. The act also requires private schools to reserve 25% of
their seats for economically disadvantaged students.
The RTE Act aims to bridge the gap between the privileged and underprivileged sections of
society by providing equal opportunities for education. The act also focuses on improving the
quality of education by setting standards for infrastructure, teacher qualifications, and student-
teacher ratios.
Key Highlights

The NEP 2020 proposes major changes in the


education system, including 5+3+3+4 structure of
school education, flexibility in choosing subjects,
emphasis on vocational education, early childhood
care and education, and multilingualism. The policy
also focuses on digital education, teacher training,
and restructuring of regulatory bodies. NEP 2020
aims to make education equitable, inclusive, and
accessible to all.
Restructuring of School Education

The NEP 2020 proposes a new structure of school


education, 5+3+3+4. The first 5 years (age 3-8
years) will comprise of foundation stage, the next 3
years (age 8-11 years) will be preparatory stage, the
next 3 years (age 11-14 years) will be middle stage
and the last 4 years (age 14-18 years) will be
secondary stage. The policy focuses on a conceptual
understanding of subjects rather than rote learning.
Multilingualism

The NEP 2020 emphasizes on multilingualism as a means of promoting national unity and cross-cultural
understanding. The policy proposes that students should be taught in their mother tongue or regional language
till grade 5, and efforts should be made to make students proficient in other languages. The policy also
recognizes the importance of classical and regional languages.
Digital Education

The NEP 2020 focuses on digital education and


proposes to increase the use of technology in
education. The policy aims to provide universal
access to the internet and digital devices to all
students. It also proposes the creation of a National
Educational Technology Forum to facilitate the use
of technology in education.
New Education Policy

The New Education Policy (NEP) was approved by the


Indian government in 2020 after extensive consultations
with stakeholders. The NEP aims to transform the education
system in India by focusing on holistic and
multidisciplinary education.
Under the NEP, the government aims to increase the Gross
Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education to 50% by
2035 and introduce a common entrance exam for admission
to universities. The policy also focuses on promoting
regional languages and integrating vocational education into
mainstream education.
Conclusion
The NEP 2020 is a step towards a progressive and inclusive education system in India. It addresses the
changing needs of the 21st century and aims to provide a holistic and multidisciplinary education to all. The
