COMPARISON OF

DIFFERENT
SEISMIC
PROTECTION
SYSTEMS
Our Aim

In this project we have attempted to compare different

Earthquake Resisting Systems by the following parameters.

 Cost
 Efficiency
 Lifeline
 Area
Our Main Objectives

 To study the construction, working principle, efficiency and

cost of different types of Earthquake Resisting Systems.

 To compare them with Seismic Cloaking method.

 To determine whether seismic cloaking method would be

feasible/suitable for practical applications.
Earthquake

An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or temblor) is the

shaking of the surface of the earth, resulting from the sudden
release of energy in the Earth’s lithosphere that creates seismic
waves.
The Methods
 Floating Foundation

 Viscous Dampers aka Shock Absorption

 Rocking Core Wall

 Pendulum based TMD

 Seismic Invisibility Cloak

The Methodology

 We compared each systems by carefully studying various

research papers and using the data as per our needs.

 As practical work was not possible during the semester we

massively relied on getting our data from research papers.
Conclusion

By conducting this research and comparing different Earthquake

Resisting systems on various different parameters such as Cost,
Efficiency, Area and Life line we come to the conclusion that
both PENDULUM based TMD and VISCOUS DAMPERS aka
SHOCK ABSORBTION are equally a good option to resist the
seismic forces.
 As not much research has been done on Seismic Invisibility
Cloaking System, we cannot compare other techniques with
this system.

 Pendulum – based technique is most efficient in case of high-

rise commercial structures which has water tanks and central
air conditioning unit installed. An addition of just 0.2% of the
total cost is increased when the space is utilized by these
units.

 Viscous Dampers – shows 200% Efficiency compared with

conventional high-rise building. This technique also has an
added advantage of installing these in existing structure. This
means that any structure can be retrofitted. Also, the cost/
benefit ratio is astonishingly high.
