What about the
Philippines??
The Philippines was an island in Southeast Asia that
resided in the Western Pacific Ocean. Only the South
China Sea separated the island from countries such as
Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan, and China, making it a
crucial location for access to the Eastern world.

Reason why the Americans
Colonized the Philippines
Americans who advocated annexation
evinced a variety of motivations: desire for
commercial opportunities in Asia, concern
that the Filipinos were incapable of self-rule,
and fear that if the United States did not
take control of the islands, another power
(such as Germany or Japan) might do so.
Economic / Social Reasons

 Strategic
location in the
Pacific Ocean,
which allowed

for trade
Economic / Social

 Philippines would serve

as a prime port of trade
to China as well as to
other Asian nations and

and Spain met in Paris on October 1,
1898 to produce a treaty that would
bring an end to the war. The American
peace commission consisted of : William
R. Day, Sen. Cushman K. Davis, Sen.
William P. Frye, Sen. George Gray, and
the Honorable Whitelaw Reid.
• The Spanish commission was headed
by Don Eugenio Montero Rios, the
President of the Senate.
• Jules Cambon, a French diplomat, also
negotiated on Spain's behalf.

The Philippines consists of huge amounts of forested land. Mahogany
was a popular tree on the islands and was very useful.
Minerals were also huge in the Philippines. The country’s mineral
deposits can be classified into metals and non-metals. Our metal
deposits are estimated at 21.5 billion metric tons, while non-metal
deposits are projected at 19.3 billion metric tons.
Economic / Social

Imperialism led to the

purchase of the islands
which led to use of these
valued resources.
Political Reason

To expand the US Territory and

establish a Military Base here in the
Philippines because of its strategic
location (since the Philippines is
considered as the “Doormat of Asia”).
