Some Examples of Jobs
Describing job tasks
A postal worker delivers mail.
A bricklayer stacks bricks and uses cement to make the bricks stick
together.
A shop assistant helps you find things (and “rings you up”).
A secretary types, answers the phones, and greets office visitors.
A vet takes care of animals.
A mechanic “fixes” or repairs your car or truck.
A farmer grows crops.

• A carpenter builds furniture and doors and cabinets
• A doctor checks your health, prescribes medicine, and provides
diagnoses.
• A hairdresser cuts and styles your hair.
• A cook prepares food, a chef creates recipes and menus.
• A fireman puts out fires and maintains a firetruck.
• A waiter (server) brings your food, refills your beverage, and gives you
the bill (check).
• A teacher helps you understand information.

• Pick a career type and let’s write about it!
Homework
• Talk to someone who has a job that you find interesting. Write about
3-4 sentences about what you learned.
• Ask them about:
• The skills you need to do the job
• The demand for the job—how many jobs are available? Will it be difficult to find
employment?
• Why it’s a good job
• What is difficult about the job
