any trespass, you who are spiritual
restore such a one in a spirit of

What is Biblical Counseling?

Counseling is essentially discipleship or

mentoring
 It is a personal discipleship about problems.
 The Bible talks a lot about different issues
and problems, all related in some way to the
sin problem.
 Counseling is helping others in the process
of SANCTIFICATION.

+ Seeking change:
+ Through confrontation
+ because of concern
I. When to counsel?
“If a man be overtaken in a trespass”
= ensnared by a sin

+ When wrong thinking or behavior has

overcome a person.

+ Context: Not walking in the Spirit but in the

flesh.
- Fleshly thinking or behavior
II. The Command to Counsel:
Restore = to repair back to usefulness

+ “Katartizo”- put in order, restore to a former condition

+ This Greek word is used of fisherman mending nets or of

doctor setting a broken bone.
- It is repairing so that it is useful again.

+ Counseling is repairing back to spiritual usefulness.

III. The Spirit of Counseling:
Meekness

+ This Greek word is gentleness, meekness (as strength that

accommodates to another’s weakness), considerateness.
- Not “I told you so” but an attitude realizing one’s own
weaknesses.
- 2 Timothy 2:25 (ESV)

correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps
grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, “
- Any wisdom or righteousness you have is a result of God’s
grace.
- You have the same, sinful heart and have done the same
things they have.
IV. The Danger of Counseling
Be tempted - falling to the same sin of the
counselee.

+ Precautions to take (like the rescuer of a drowning

man drowning Himself.

- Hate the sin: look how it could destroy this

person
- Remember you are weak: “considering yourself”
- Realize that God is helping you against that sin
and that Satan is trying to make you fall to that sin
V. The Qualification of Counselor
spiritual

 Not sinless; not a degree in psychology or

social work.
 In context, walking in the Spirit.
 Being submissive to, controlled by, obedient to
the Spirit of God.
 How?
 Through doing the moral will of God- the
